Peanut harvest season is right around the corner! 🥜🚜

Now is the time to start checking peanut maturity and planning for the right digging date. Pod blasting is a valuable management tool that can help growers determine optimum maturity, potentially adding 300–500 pounds per acre and 3–5 points on grade.

Today, APPA had the opportunity to work with Aaron Wells and his son, John Thomas, to share the story of peanut farming and harvest with queens competing to be the next National Peanut Festival queen. After learning about the crop that they are striving to represent, the young queens returned to a lunch generously provided by the Houston County Farmers Federation, warmly presented by Mrs. Gloria Jeffcoat and Mrs. Charlene Roney. Always an advocate for peanut consumption, Mrs Gloria brought homemade peanut butter cookies to share. We are thankful that Angila Brannon brought back the opportunity for the queens to visit the field classroom and learn more about this healthy, sustainable crop that farmers in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia are proud to grow.

Your checkoff dollars at work! 🥜

Auburn University’s Dr. Alvaro Sanz-Saez and Ph.D. student Fritzner Pierre are putting checkoff dollars to work through research focused on Alabama peanut production.

As part of their project, the team is using a LI-COR machine to collect valuable plant data and better understand how peanuts respond under different conditions. This research helps provide growers with science-backed information to support decisions in the field and strengthen peanut production for the future. 🌱

Alabama Peanut Producers Association partnered with Alabama Extension on Aug. 25 for the Monroe-Escambia Crops Tour. Farmers and industry representatives visited local cotton and peanut trials while hearing timely production updates from Extension specialists and industry partners.

The tour included discussions on cotton varieties and insect management, peanut varieties, seeding rates and Syngenta’s Vertento trial. Attendees also received a peanut equipment harvest checklist, weed-control recommendations and disease updates as growers prepare for harvest.

Thank you to the Grant family for hosting, along with Auburn University, Alabama Extension, GreenPoint Ag, Syngenta and everyone who helped make the tour possible. We appreciate the farmers and agricultural professionals who joined us for a great day of learning and fellowship! 🌱🥜🚜

Last week, PLA Class XIV members Chadwick Armstrong and Jacob Scott, along with APPA’s Libbie Johnson and Peyton Woods, traveled to Lubbock, Texas, for an inside look at West Texas agriculture! 🤠🌾

From peanuts and manufacturing to vineyards, buffalo and composting, the group had the opportunity to experience the diversity of agriculture across the region and connect with those who help make it possible.

We’re thankful for the opportunity to learn, make new connections and bring those experiences back home to Alabama agriculture! 🥜
