What is the Brown Bag Program?
The Brown Bag Program of the Wiregrass is a supplemental grocery program for eligible individuals, 60 and older. Each month seniors are provided bags of groceries during the third week of the month - the time when most budgets are depleted. There is no cost to the individuals served and eligibility is determined by using the federal income guidelines for poverty. The bulk of the food comes from the Wiregrass Area Food Bank. The food that comes from the Food Bank is donated by wholesalers, grocers, and distributors. Food is also donated by civic groups, religious organizations, businesses, and individuals. Funding for the program is provided through annual sponsorships of $65 per person. The Brown Bag program serves seniors in Houston, Henry, Dale, Coffee, Barbour, and Geneva counties with a small army of loving volunteers. If you’d like to help the Brown Bag program, you may do so by sponsoring recipients, volunteering at a distribution site, delivering groceries to the homebound, or helping the program to find additional sources of donated food - especially fresh produce.
