We are saddened by the recent announcement of Dr. Emmett G. Price III's departure from Gordon Conwell Theological School. Dr. Price has made an impact in churches in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He has also made an impact nationally and globally. There have been recent communications asking why. The only answer we have received is not sufficient. Dr. Price has worked tirelessly as the only Black faculty member on the Hamilton Campus. We know he has trained and mentored many.

"I am vexed by the constant hand-wringing of evangelical scholars and popular writers explaining away their racism or, at worst, not even considering race in their analysis. Their very omission of race continues to promote the supposition that evangelicalism reads "white." Writes Dr. Anthea Butler in her new book “White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America.”

We also know the Black academicians have been used as diversity hires. Blacks have been used for their intellect and then mistreated as a misfit. We are vexed and seek to understand how a person awarded over one million in a grant is now without a job. The reason given in a previous letter is financial. We are not seeking to tear down but seeking to understand how other professors received promotions and endowed chairs. The Black Churches have not been invited to raise funds for an endowed chair. We are seeking answers because, once again, this particular institution has ousted another Black academician. This institution has a past of silently ridding Blacks from their world.

We are asking clergy and others to sign this open letter to get an explanation. This is the least the church deserves. ~ Rev. Kenneth
