Hello everyone! Welcome to the DARC Ham! This post is ment to, introduce our club, give newbies some information about Ham radio, and give all of you some Ham news from Southeast Missouri.
The Doniphan Amateur Radio Club was started about 4 years ago in Doniphan, MO by Mac (President,) Kent (Vice President and Secretary) and Joel (Treasurer). We met at the 137 year old Methodist church until a terrible fire destroyed it on 4-24-2024. Now we meet at the old Presbyterian church, a gorgeous stone building, next to the Library in Doniphan, while a new Methodist church is under construction. Thank God for good insurance!
We meet the second Saturday of each month at 10 AM in the church basement. Dues are only $20 per year. The basement entrance is around the back of the building. If you are not familiar with Doniphan, find us on a map or your map app on your cell phone. We are next to the Library. As you enter town on highway 160, turn south at the light where the McDonalds is. Follow the road past the Armory sign, there is a sign for the Library to the right. The church is just before the Library in a large wooded lot with large trees. All hams and interested persons are welcome to visit/join us.
I am the new president of the Club. I am Bob, KD0WCD, a general ham. I live outside of Ellsinore, MO so rest assured that you don’t have to live in Doniphan to be a member. Anyone interested in Ham radio is welcome to join, visit, make donations etc just show up and ask questions! We will welcome all your questions before and after our meeting.
Ham radio is called Amateur radio because per federal law it can not be used for making money. The hobby has been around for a long time. The story I recall is that a radio club started at Harvard, early in the 1900’s, was started by three people. Their initials were H, A, M. The name stuck! How original eh? Hams are funny that way…
Ham radio is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, or FCC.
