The Walbridge apple trees🍎at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry appear even more majestic since our last visit a decade ago. We now know their variety, thanks to collaborations with fellow apple enthusiasts! We look forward to returning saplings to grow alongside the mother trees, hoping they thrive for over a century like their parents.

A variety of apple tree once thought to be extinct was found in Colorado Springs. The two Walbridge trees, planted about 130 years ago, stand in front of the Western Museum of Mining and Industry, living remnants of the Reynolds farm that used to occupy the property.  Ten years ago, staff with a no...

FOUND! The lost Walbridge! For over a decade, the once popular Walbridge was one of Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project’s most WANTED ALIVE lost apples. Turns out, we had it almost the entire time, thanks to two trees we discovered 10 years ago at the Western Museum of Mining and Industry near Colorado Springs. Since then, its historical name remained a mystery, so we referred to it as the “baby blue group” to help inventory these unknown apple trees that genetically matched to each other.

Over the years, an increasing number of "baby blue" apple trees were discovered by MORP and the Ark Valley Fruit Tree Network in Colorado, along with additional finds by others in New Mexico, Utah, and Washington, indicating that this mysterious apple variety was once cultivated extensively throughout the West. Through collaborative efforts with apple enthusiasts nationwide, the “baby blue” apple has recently been identified by the Historic Fruit Tree Working Group of North America as the long-lost Walbridge. Curious about how many students can fit under the OLD Transcendent Crabapple, locally known as the “Jasper Hall Jelly Crab”? It turns out, around 50! MORP was thrilled to host two school groups for a tour of the Orchard Hub, where they learned about grafting, heritage apples, juice-making, and orchard establishment & history. Overall, we enjoyed a beautiful early spring day. What a wonderful group of students and educators! Kwiyagat Community Academy 🍎🐻

🍎 Scion Available!

If you’re a fellow grafter, we’re excited to announce that is now available for purchase! To place your order, please start by reviewing the details at the MORP website link below. Next, select your preferences!

Popular varieties are anticipated to sell out quickly. If your preferred selection is unavailable, rest assured that we are diligently planting more trees each year to ensure a greater supply of scion and trees for you. Thank you for your continued support and patience!

This is scionwood for grafting, not a rooted tree. Rooted trees are also available for shipping or local pickup.

Scion orders will begin shipping on Mondays around mid-February, processed in the order they are received. You will receive an email notification with tracking information once your order has shipped.
