Ford County 4-H

Ford County 4-H 4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and lifeskills.

4-H activities have purpose—to develop each of the four H’s (head, heart, hands, and health.) While 4-H activities are indeed fun, their purpose is not just for entertainment but rather learning skills and values through putting them into practice. Members choose from a wide range of individual projects, based on their interests and the availability of a knowledgeable adult in the community to ser

ve as a mentor/leader (matching facilitated through clubs). Through these projects, members set goals, learn the skills needed to achieve goals, and exhibit/demonstrate their skills at events like county fairs, speaking contests and other competitions.

4-H believes that families need each other (along with knowledgeable, caring people in the community) to grow great kids. Through working together, families can leverage each other’s skills, knowledge and strengths rather than just their own, giving support to each other in the process. 4-H believes these family/community networks are the most effective way to develop great kids, and 4-H is the conduit through which these networks happen. These networks of families and knowledgeable friends (adult volunteers) within communities are called 4-H clubs. Clubs can take many forms, but they share several fundamental traits:
-They are made up of families and adult volunteers from the community
-They are multi-age (for youth aged 7-18), though they often have activities within them for particular ages
-Pre-teens and teenagers take leadership roles in both making the club work and teaching younger members, under the supervision of adults

This is a final reminder that state market beef nominations are due today Friday, May 1! This is a firm deadline that will be enforced, no exceptions.

Steers, of any breed, and market heifers must be nominated by May 1 to be eligible for the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive and/or KJLS. This includes submitting each animal through the online nomination system (ShoWorks) and postmarking a completed and signed official DNA hair sample envelope for each animal by May 1. Make sure to include a copy of the receipt listing the animals that have been entered in the online system with your completed DNA hair sample envelopes. Certified mail, or any method in which you get a receipt as proof of mailing and tracking, is highly suggested and encouraged!

If your family used the “skip ahead” method to order DNA envelopes the first time you logged into the system, and you have not entered your tag numbers, you MUST return to the nomination link and actually submit your market beef animals. This includes entering the tag numbers, breeds, etc. by 5:00PM on May 1. You will also be prompted to upload each child’s 2026 YQCA certificate and you family’s 2026 Declaration Form when you add their first animal to the cart. Animals must be submitted online PRIOR to returning DNA envelopes. This also includes those using extra DNA envelopes purchased in a previous year. If you do not submit your animals through the online system, we cannot accept your signed DNA envelopes. Both parts must be complete.

Everyone is also encouraged to have all eligible kids in the family sign all the DNA envelopes and enter all animals under all exhibitors accounts online. This does mean an animal could be entered in ShoWorks multiple times, under multiple kids in a family. If you do not list a specific tag number under an exhibitor’s account, they will NOT be able to enter and show that animal at a state show
