Chapter 5: Revitalizing the Post

Every generation of Dixon American Legion Post 353 has faced challenges.

A few years ago, our Post found itself at another crossroads. Membership had declined, the building needed attention, and many wondered what the future would hold.

As one newspaper article put it, there was hope that Post 353 could once again become a place where people gathered.

That hope became action.

Members, volunteers, and supporters stepped forward—not because the building was old, but because what happens inside these walls still matters.

People like Rod Ferris helped launch new fundraising efforts, providing resources to invest back into the Post. Volunteers donated countless hours. New ideas were welcomed. The community showed up.

Today, we're seeing the results.

Our monthly Fish & Chicken Fries continue to bring neighbors together.

We hope that the reception hall will be busy once again with weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, funeral luncheons, church services, card clubs, and community events.

New members and volunteers are helping move the Post forward, while longtime members continue sharing the traditions that built it.

But our work isn't finished.

An American Legion isn't measured by its building—it's measured by its people.

As we approach 100 years of serving Dixon, we're looking for the next generation of members, volunteers, veterans, and supporters who want to help ensure Post 353 remains a place where our community can gather for the next 100 years.

Whether you have an hour to volunteer, an idea to share, or simply enjoy stopping in for a meal or conversation, there's a place for you here.

Because buildings don't preserve themselves.

People do.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.

The story of Dixon American Legion Post 353 is still being written, and we can't wait to see what the next chapter holds.

IT’S FRIDAY… and look who showed up for his shift.

Rick’s here, he’s behind the bar, and judging by that face… somebody better order a beer before he gets crankier. 🤣

Come keep Rick company tonight at the Dixon Legion!

Cold drinks, questionable fashion choices, and apparently adult-sized temper tantrums. 👶

Happy Friday! 🇺🇸

🔥 We’re fine. Everything is fine. 😂🔥

Bobby & Cinda are behind the bar Thursday, doing their best to survive this heat one cold drink at a time.

Stop in, cool off, say hi, and maybe check on Bobby… that ice pack is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Cold drinks. Good people. Strong A/C.
What more do you need?

Chapter 4: A New Heart for the Post

Buildings are important. But it's what happens inside them that truly matters. As we looked toward the future of Dixon American Legion Post 353, we asked ourselves a simple question:

How can we create a place where people want to gather?

Every Legion has a place where stories are shared. For the Dixon American Legion Post 353, we wanted that place to be more than just another room.

The family room just off the bar had become a space with untapped potential. Rather than simply giving it a fresh coat of paint, we envisioned something more—a place where members, veterans, families, and visitors could enjoy a meal, play cards, watch a game, share stories, and connect while surrounded by nearly a century of Legion history.

That vision became the Legacy Room.

Today, the room has been transformed with updated finishes and displays that tell the story of Dixon American Legion Post 353.

A few historic photographs now line the walls, honoring the veterans, members, families, and volunteers whose dedication built this Post one generation at a time. As more photographs and stories are discovered, the Legacy Room will continue to grow—preserving the history of Post 353 for future generations.

Beyond the Legacy Room, we've continued creating a more welcoming experience throughout the Post. The entryway has been refreshed, new dart boards and gaming machines have been added, and our bar has welcomed new bartenders who help make every visit feel like coming home.

These changes weren't made simply to modernize the building.

They were made to create a place where history is preserved, friendships are built, conversations continue, and new memories are made.

Because that's what this Post has always been about.

People.
