PSA: (Public Service Announcement)
So I figured I would post this for anyone out there that has a pregnant female piggy, or is thinking about mating a pair for babies.
When my Pearl had her three babies, one escaped, when I eventually got him back to his mom, I found out she wasn’t nursing him. I almost went out and bought some milk at the grocery store. However, after doing some quick research, I found sources that said cow milk is toxic to Guinea pigs, scratch that then. What was going to work?
I didn’t have alot of time for the baby’s sake, I don’t know if he’s even nursed since he’s been born.
According to many articles, Cat milk is close, but still not 100% good, and i’m not going out to find a pregnant cat. Turns out, there is only one tested product to replace a Guinea pig mother’s milk, and I quickly ordered it.
I reasoned, If I never have this problem again, I have it in house, - Insurance.
Delivery in time to help young Andrew was the biggest issue, not for around a week🤬
I tried feeding the little guy “Critical care” food a product by Oxbow, I swear by it, helped me save one Piggy’s life. He didn’t want it. Guinea pigs are born with all they need, they can eat veggies, Or hay, drink water, but for the first few weeks they need their mother’s milk in addition to anything else they eat.
Much to my sadness I lost little Andrew.
About a week after, the product finally arrived. I was so mad, hard enough to care for these amazing little creatures without a vet, and most vets know little about their care.
This product is recommended by most that know Guinea pigs, I haven’t got any Idea on how much per feeding, its dry, so have to read instructions, it also needs to be warm for them. Picture of product, and little Andrew 💔🐹
