Teller Historic & Environmental Coalition

Teller Historic & Environmental Coalition T.H.E. Teller County is located in the center of Colorado, 20 miles west of Colorado Springs. For this reason, T.H.E.

The Teller Historic and Environmental Coalition is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation formed to preserve the historic, environmental, scenic and recreational assets in Teller County and to inform the public about the significance of these assets. Coalition is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 2000 to encourage community cooperation and collaboration in the preservation and protection of t

he natural environment, historic landmarks and cultural heritage in and around Teller County, Colorado. Our members include nonprofit organizations, government agencies, area businesses and concerned citizens, all working together in support of common goals. Its mountainous terrain ranges in elevation from 8,000 to 14,000 feet and includes the western slope of Pikes Peak. Highway 24, the major east-west thoroughfare was once a Ute Indian Trail, becoming a wagon road during the gold rush of the 1890s and then a railroad bed for the Colorado Midland Railroad in 1887. Today Teller County faces the very real challenges brought about by rapid grown and demands on limited water, financial and infrastructure resources. Coalition is committed to … preservation of the historic, cultural, environmental, recreational and scenic resources in and around Teller County, and to broadening public understanding regarding the significance of those resources.

The 8th Annual Breit Awards Banquet was held on Sunday, October 12, at the Ute Pass Cultural Center, in Woodland Park, to honor Doris "Dee" Breitenfeld, Teller County's longtime community member and supporter of the arts, environmental conservation, historic preservation, T.H.E. Board Director Emeritus, and more!

For the past eight years (excluding 2020), T.H.E. Coalition has been honoring one of their beloved founding members, Ms. Dee Breitenfeld, by also honoring individuals and organizations who work to preserve our local history, an effort that Dee was involved in throughout her life.

The Breit Awards Banquet is a fundraiser and an opportunity to recognize these special honorees.
The 2025 award winners were:
--- Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument (https://www.fossilbeds.org) - a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to assisting the National Park Service in preserving, protecting, and interpreting the natural and historical resources of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. The Friends’ primary mission is to raise funds and provide assistance to projects that preserve the fossils of Florissant, as well as to organize and promote programs and activities that support the Monument’s educational, conservation, and scientific research objectives.
--- Friends of Mueller State Park (https://friendsofmuellersp.com) - a non-profit 501c3 public charity that raises money to fund youth programs, park improvements and interpretive exhibits to enhance the experience of every visitor who enters the park.
--- Merry Jo Larsen - one of the original Woodland Park community members and owner of The Cowhand, a country-Western store opened in 1965 and operated by Merry Jo Larsen and Marty McKenna (who are second and third generation members of the Stull family), for more than two decades. Merry Jo and her parents (Howard and Joan Stull) ran horse stables near the Paint Pony Golf Course, where the houses on Valley View Drive now sit. Her family took care of horses for ranches in the region, and furnished them for a nearby girls’ camp. Merry Jo is a staple in the local community and is involved in many projects to make the City of Woodland Park better for now and for the future.

Thank you to members of the Gold Camp Victorian Society for bringing the Harvey Girls to the banquet. And thank you to Peak View BBQ for providing a delicious dinner! Kudos to all of our community partners and sponsors. We look forward to seeing you at next year's event in October!

Elation over the Bergstrom Park plan, maybe a bit of shock, but the collective reaction after seeing the renovation sketches was joy.
