The stars that sing. In the mid-20th century, Laurens van der Post recorded a striking encounter with Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert. Sitting around a fire, he confessed he could not hear the stars. At first, they thought he was joking. Surely everyone could hear the stars—they sang as clearly as birds or wind. But when they realized he was serious, their laughter stopped. Their faces turned solemn, pitying. To them, his inability wasn’t a quirk of perception but a grave affliction, one of the worst illnesses imaginable.

This moment reveals a profound divide between worldviews. For the Bushmen, nature is not silent; it is alive, filled with voices. To lack that connection was to be cut off from the heartbeat of existence. For van der Post, raised in a modern European culture, the cosmos was distant and silent, stripped of its voices by science and industrial detachment.

Their reaction forces us to reflect: what have we lost in exchange for progress? The Bushmen’s sorrow wasn’t mockery but compassion—a reminder that true poverty lies not in material lack, but in losing the ability to hear the music of creation itself.
