We as a Hispanic community have lost a great one today.

Today we mourn the passing of Belle Ortiz “The Godmother of Mariachi” school programs across the U.S.

During a time when Spanish was prohibited in Texas public schools, she helped introduce mariachi into public schools and colleges in San Antonio, across Texas, and eventually throughout the U.S.

We would like to congratulate Mailyne Raveyi Martinez for being the recipient of the 1st annual Castro County Hispanic Heritage Month Committee Scholarship.

Mailyne Raveyi Martinez will be pursuing an art degree at The Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. Her focus will be on illustration where she will create illustrated books of her own.

We are honored to select you Mailyne, you make Dimmitt very proud. We as a committee will support you as much as we can to help you fulfill your academic goals. We wish you the best of luck. Congratulations!
