Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund Promoting vegan living to create a kinder, healthier world for animals and people. My husband Gregory J. The Gregory J. Alysoun Mahoney

Reiter (June 6, 1963 - October 16, 2015) was a leading U.S. analyst of mortgage-backed securities - and a person widely known for exceptional kindness and generosity. We are excited to announce that the 2026 PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) 11th annual Gregory J. Reiter Animal Rescue Award goes to the all-volunteer Twin County Humane Society (TCHS) in Southwest Virginia, with special recognition to volunteer Susan McGrady Hevey.

Since 2016, PETA has presented this award each year on or around Greg’s June 6 birthday, to an organization or individual doing exceptional work to rescue animals from abuse, neglect, military conflict or natural disaster.

The Twin County Humane Society works in underserved communities of Carroll County, Grayson County, and the City of Galax, Virginia, helping thousands of animals and their guardians each year.

Volunteer Susan McGrady Hevey is receiving special recognition for her commitment to difficult, unglamorous field work in her community — work that often makes the difference between continued neglect and lasting change for animals.

Today I mark the 10th anniversary of the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund, a Donor-Advised Fund I established on Earth Day April 22, 2016, to continue the legacy of my late husband.

In announcing the Fund back then, I wrote:

“Greg came from a modest background – and despite or perhaps because of that, he went out of his way to help others as soon as he had the means to do so. I established this Fund to continue Greg’s legacy of caring for all animals, human and non-human. The fund will focus on helping the most helpless – and on shaking up conventional thinking about animals, which Greg liked to do. More concretely, it will focus on three areas – animal rescue, veganism, and wildlife conservation – to which Greg was most dedicated in life.”

Ten years on, much has changed in the wider world, and the Fund’s focus areas have evolved – but the core mission remains the same.

During 2025-26 to date, the Fund has made grants to A Well-Fed World, Faunalytics, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Sentient Media.

Other grantees in the Fund’s history have included the Animal Place Food for Thought program, The Transfarmation Project of Mercy For Animals, Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, and Woodstock Farm Sanctuary.

I've been grateful for professional management under The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) in Harrisburg, PA since 2022, and under other entities in the years prior. I've also been grateful for contributions into the Fund from many friends across the United States, who have helped extend the Fund's reach.

In addition to making grants through the Fund, I have also personally supported a number of these organizations by volunteering time to education and outreach initiatives, doing physical work with animals, and personally adopting rescued dogs and horses.

As the world of 2026 presents us with new and greater challenges, I'll continue doing my little part to promote compassion for animals and people.

Here's a quick look back at a few highlights of these last ten years.

In the mad world of early 2026, here's what the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund did in the first quarter -- focusing on support for programs to increase healthy plant-based food access for vulnerable communities:

1) A grant to longtime partner Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, inspired in particular by two of the organization’s many programs: its nearly 20 years of work with the Navajo Nation to tackle diabetes with a return to ancestral diets, and its Healthy Food Makes Cents classes that prioritize underserved audiences with a focus on healthy diets that are budget-friendly and accessible.

2) A grant to A Well-Fed World, inspired by its Feeding Equity Fund, particularly its partnerships with the Twin Cities Vegan Chef Collective and other St. Paul and Minneapolis groups delivering Shelter in Place Grocery Packs to vulnerable neighbors trapped at home.

Thanks to The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, one of the earliest U.S. community foundations, which has served as the Fund's manager since New Year 2022!

Proudly sharing this 2025 recap of all the organizations and programs the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund helped support during its 10th year -- fighting the many forms of animal cruelty while championing vegan living and systemic change that also benefits people, with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Sentient Media, A Well-Fed World and Faunalytics.

Also many thank-you's -- to The Foundation for Enhancing Communities for managing the Fund since New Year 2022, and to all the generous individuals who donated into the Fund in 2025.

Here’s the grand finale of our annual Top 10 countdown of organizations and programs the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund helped support....

#1 - In 2025, for the 7th consecutive year, the fund was a sponsor of The Exam Room Podcast and The Exam Room Live on YouTube and Facebook -- all about plant-based health from nutrition experts at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The program has recorded nearly 700 episodes since its launch in 2017, with audiences in 150+ countries.

Some of our favorite episodes debunk disinformation from animal agriculture industries – like Dr. Neal Barnard’s “Doctor’s List of Healthy Processed Foods.” The overall fan favorite this year was “Remove Microplastics Naturally.”

# 2 – The Fund made a grant in 2025 to support PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)’s multi-faceted vegan campaign -- especially its partnerships with local organizations throughout North America to distribute free hearty plant-based roasts for the winter holidays.

PETA's core principle is that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. PETA advocates for vegan living to save animals, and for human health and a cleaner global environment.

# 3 – PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Cruelty Investigations goes undercover to expose animal abuse in many industries around the world. One target is meat, dairy, and egg farms that claim to be “humane.”

PETA investigators have revealed cruelty and unsanitary conditions at turkey supplier Plainville Farms in Pennsylvania, Oakridge Dairy in Connecticut, Farmer Focus chicken company in Virginia, Grand Barr goat dairy in Oregon, and many others.

These PETA investigations have led to numerous cruelty-to-animals convictions, while the farms have removed false “humane” claims from their advertising language, and lost the business of major supermarket chains.

The Greg Fund made a grant to support this work in 2025, as in many previous years.

#4 – The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Research Modernization campaign works to prevent animal suffering in experiments, and to promote modern scientific methods that deliver better outcomes for humans.

PETA played a key role in many 2025 breakthroughs, including:

1) A U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) decision to stop funding animal-only studies.

2) A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) decision to phase out experiments on monkeys.

Vox has called this set of breakthroughs “the one thing the Trump administration has gotten unequivocally right.”

The Greg Fund made a grant to support this work in 2025, as in several previous years.

This Christmas Day, in our countdown of ten programs the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund helped support in 2025, we highlight some heroic work in Ukraine.

# 5 – PETA Deutschland and PETA’s Global Compassion Fund continue their partnership with Порятунок тварин Харків / Animal rescue Kharkiv, Ukraine (ARK) to save the most innocent victims of war.

Beginning in the first days after Russia’s February 2022 invasion, these groups have provided veterinary care to sick or injured animals, moved nearly 30,000 animals abroad or to the safest possible locations within Ukraine, and delivered millions of pounds of supplies.

Initially focused on companion animals at their Kharkiv Veterinary Clinic and Little Prince Cat Sanctuary, ARK now also runs a large Peace Sanctuary for dogs as well as horses, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens and ducks.

The Greg Fund contributed to this valiant work for the fourth consecutive year in 2025.

# 6 – PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) presented its annual Gregory J. Reiter Animal Rescue Award to Professor Ranyoung Kim of Jeju Vegan, for her commitment to helping horses and other animals in South Korea.

Professor Kim worked with PETA to expose the tragic fate of numerous U.S. racehorses exported to South Korea – and to rescue Thoroughbred former racehorses My Elusive Dream and Golden Minister from slaughter.
