Recently, I introduced three bills to support Pennsylvania's hunters, farmers, and forests. This legislation would repeal the ban on Sunday hunting, connect farmers to licensed hunters to manage deer populations on their property, and require that at least one member of the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners has experience in the agriculture industry.

Many thanks to the great people that helped shape this effort over many years.

Show your support for my three bills by contacting the House here: https://pahouse.com/steele/TakeAction?ac=173.

We are pleased to name Dr. Duane Diefenbach of Penn State as our 2023 NDA Professional Deer Manager of the Year Award winner. This award is presented to a person with significant on-the-ground experience, and one who has made a measurable impact to deer and deer hunting through education, research, or management on public or private lands.

Duane is adjunct professor of wildlife ecology and leader of the Pennsylvania Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit at Penn State. He and his students have been collaborating with the Pennsylvania Game Commission since 2000 on a series of research projects on deer and deer hunters. This work has included studying survival and causes of mortality in fawns, effects of antler restriction regulations on harvest rates and dispersal in bucks, dispersal behavior of female white-tailed deer, and the spatial distribution of hunters and deer harvest as influenced by roads and landscape characteristics.

Duane’s current deer research is The Deer-Forest Study, which is a long-term study of the relationship of deer herbivory, competing vegetation, and soil conditions on the forest vegetation conditions. He and his students have presented their research at numerous NDA national and Branch events during the past 20 years.

Duane is also an avid bird and deer hunter. He received degrees from Washington State University, the University of Maine, and the University of Georgia. His areas of expertise include white-tailed deer, biometrics, population estimation and harvest management. He is most widely known for his work on the ecology and management of white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania.

If you’re worried that using prescribed fire in hardwoods damages timber value, Dr. Marcus Lashley and Jordan Nanney have done your homework. Gathering the science, and assuming the high end of timber damage and costs of producing protein by burning in upland hardwoods, they found prescribed fire still produces the cheapest deer forage and protein per pound of any method, beating even warm-season food plots.

Marcus and Jordan share all the receipts for their math in the new article on our website, with multiple scientific studies backing their calculations. Check it out at https://bit.ly/3JhTCSf
