Walk and Talk

"As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart."
PROVERBS 27:19

I’m going to get in shape! This time, I'm serious! I found myself malling this
sweeping statement to my wife one night.
For years physical fitness had been important to me, but as work and life got busier, I allowed it to slip into the background. Working out, which I once saw as an enjoyable way to unwind and release tension, now felt like a chore. My once pristine diet was now full of unhealthy foods.
It was a great idea, but somehow I never quite got there. I planned to wake at 5 a.m. to work out. I said I would eat healthy. But I still haven't started. I meant to—really I did—but I haven't followed through. My good intentions were no more than empty talk.
When something is truly important to us, we can see it in the way we live. It's more than just words; there is corresponding action.
That's why we all have to ask ourselves how important recovery is in our lives. Are we just saying we want to change? Or do we mean it enough to follow through with our actions? If we really want freedom, healing, and whole-ness, we have to put in the effort. We have to go to our meetings, attend church regularly, read God's Word, and apply the principles we learn.
We have to work to be transparent. Our walk has to back up our talk.

PRAYER
Lord God, help me to put feet to my good in-tentions, so that I can live the life you planned for me, one filled with hope and joy. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frozen in the Starting Block

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past."
ISAIAH 43:18

A runner jogs in place, warming up for the big race. He places his feet in the blocks, poised to shoot forward.
He shakes one hand and then the other, getting loose before positioning his fingers on
the track before him. He listens for the announcer's words—Ready! Set!—and then the starting gun fires! The other competitors shoot forward, but he is frozen in his spot and can't move. He never even starts the race. What a tragedy that would be!
When we allow ourselves to be consumed with the past, it's like we're frozen in the blocks, unable to run our race in the present.
I spent many years wishing my past had been different, going over it and over it in my mind That rearview perspective kept me from living out my present and investing in my future.
The problem facing the frozen runner is pride. It's the reason many people never start the race and many others never finish. They are too proud to admit they need help. Instead, they rehearse the past, hoping to find a way to blame someone or something else for their trouble.
Letting pride keep us in denial is a costly exercise that shuts us out of the race. But God tells us that if we humbly bring our past to him, he will take our past and forgive it, renew it, and restore it. Then we can run our race to win!

PRAYER
Thank you, Father, for providing all that I need to move forward with my life. Poised with my feet in the blocks, I'll focus on you rather than my past. In Jesus' name, Amen.

In the Weeds

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."
2 CORINTHIANS 4:8-9

I worked in a restaurant for five years.
When we were buried, slammed, as busy as we could be, we would say we were "in the weeds." When everyone is in the weeds at the same time, chaos ensues! But here's what I've learned:
When we're in the weeds, we have two choices. We can panic or get to work. Panicking is easy, but all it does is waste time and energy, both of which are in short supply. And even worse, we only end up right back where we started.
Getting to work is a much better option. But it's a step-by-step process. First, we have to determine what is the biggest need and meet that need first. Then we do the next thing, then the next thing, until the shift is over. If you try to do it all at once, you'll be as bad off as if you had panicked.
Many of us are "in the weeds" when it comes to our lives and our recovery. It just seems like we are running as fast as we can and getting nowhere. We're behind in everything, and we feel like we're out of control. When we find ourselves in that situation, we have to take one step at a time, determining the greatest need and taking care of that. Then the next, and the next. We will make it if we keep our heads and refuse to panic.

PRAYER
Father, thank you for helping me to get my life in order. Show me each new day what I need to do first. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Put Me In, Coach

"We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."
2 CORINTHIANS 5:20-21

Our six-year-old twin grandsons are playing T-ball this year. One plays shortstop, and he knows there is almost always a force out at second base. When he gets the ball, which is often, he runs right to second base. Sometimes he gets there first, and the runner is out. Other times the runner gets there first and is safe. The interesting thing is that no matter who gets there first, my grandson's reaction is always the same—sheer joy!
With hands raised in the air, he jumps up and down, as proud as he can be just to be in the game.
What a lesson for me! Why can't I be joyful even when things don't go the way I want them to? James, the brother of Jesus, said that we should consider it all joy when we face trials and tribulations. James acknowledges that there will be stumbles, setbacks, and some lack of success in every race. But the important thing is that God has chosen us to be in the game!
No one but Jesus plays a perfect game. But because he did, we are all winners. That's a lot to be joyful about.

PRAYER
Father God, thank you for choosing me to play on your team. It is the greatest thrill of my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Feeling Alone

"He will never leave nor forsake you."
HEBREWS 13:5 GNT

As we all know, it's possible to be in a room full of people and still feel overwhelmed by loneliness. There were times in my own life when a room full of people seemed like the loneliest place in the world. The enemy is clever that way. He takes advantage of our unresolved hurt and convinces us to pull away from those we were designed to be in relationship with.
God did not intend for us to be alone. When I find myself feeling lonely, I remind myself that my Father God is always with me. He has promised never to leave me. I am not alone.
Once I've reconnected with that truth, I feel I have the strength to reach out to others with honesty and transparency.
We've all been hurt at one time or another.
Most of us have been hurt many times by those we loved and trusted. Human beings are capable of inflicting a lot of pain on themselves and others. But this does not mean we should stop reaching out. We need community. We need each other too much to stay away, too much to draw back, too much to isolate ourselves from our brothers and sisters in Christ.

PRAYER
Lord God, you know I've been hurt, but loneliness hurts as well. Give me the courage I need to reach out to others again. In Jesus' name, Amen.

In the Morning

"In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly."
PSALM 5:3

The best time to fellowship with God is anytime. He is always waiting, always inviting. But if we want to receive the most from our time with him, there is one thing we should consider: we should choose a time when we are at our best, fresh and awake, ready to receive from him. For some, that is first thing in the morning; others might find that evening is better. Still others might prefer mid-afternoon or right before lunch. All that matters is that we choose a part of the day that feels best to us and stick with it.
So what does fellowship with God consist of?
Prayer? Bible meditation? Yes. It also means being quiet and listening to what God has to say to us. The most important thing to remember is that this fellowship shouldn't feel forced.
Think of it as sitting down with a close friend or loved one. In such cases, we talk about lots of things—our needs, our wants, our circum-stances, our burdens, and more. Conversation takes place, along with smiles, humor, encouragement, and words of loving affection.
Fellowship with God shouldn't be a chore. It should be a time we look forward to every day, an oasis of peace and devotion in our busy days. How wonderful is it that God wants to be with us?

PRAYER
Thank you, Lord, for inviting me to spend time with you every day, time to talk through challenges, be refreshed, and cast off my burdens. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pomp and Circumstance

"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'"
MATTHEW 25:21

I was as proud as a grandfather could be as I watched our twin grandsons walk across the stage to receive their kindergarten graduation diplomas. The energetic group of five- and six-year-olds had marched proudly into the room and given a captivating perform-ance, which was topped off by the presentation of diplomas and the official moving of the tassel to the opposite side of the cap.
I thought about our Father, as he watches us march across the stage of this life. How he must smile as he watches every moment of our growth. We are not all growing at the same pace. We are not all achieving the same goals in life, but we are moving toward spiritual ma-turity. What matters is progress, not perfec-tion.
Getting better one day at a time is what the Bible calls sanctification. Becoming more like Jesus one moment at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time is what we call recovery. At the end of our race, we have a diploma waiting for us, and right at the top are the words, "Well done good and faithful servant." At the bot-tom, it's already been signed by Jesus, the one and only perfect person.

PRAYER
Lord God, thank you for helping me clean up my life one moment at a time. In Jesus' name, Amen.

False Advertising

"Submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you."
JAMES 4:7-8

We're all familiar with those advertisements in which a medication is described in glowing terms by
people with bright smiles, followed by a daunting list of possible side effects. "Do you have acne problems? Try our medicine: Warning!
May cause constipation, dizziness, increased sweating, lightheadedness, damage to your heart, loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, bleeding in your ears, loss of your fingernails, and more."
These ads make me think about our choices in life. There are things that look great on the surface, but they come with a long list of side effects. Each time, the Holy Spirit is warning us, "Don't do it! I know how this will end." At that point, we have a choice: Prepare to live with the consequences, or ask God for strength to resist. Let's be honest, sin often looks like fun. If it didn't it would be far less difficult to resist. What isn't fun is the consequences, made worse by the fact that we ignored the warning and did it anyway.
Yes, some things in life look so good, so en-ticing, but the real consequences to ourselves and those we love are reason enough to heed the warning and stay away.

PRAYER
Father, make me wise to the false claims made by the enemy of my soul. I renew my commitment to listen when your Holy Spirit warns me to stay away. In Jesus' name, Amen.

✨ Celebrate Recovery this Monday ✨

This week we’ll be diving into Lesson 8 Sponsor with Danny Mansfield leading the lesson. 💛

One of the most powerful parts of recovery is learning that healing was never meant to happen alone.

So many people come to large group, but never take the next step into Open Share Groups. And honestly, a lot of that comes from fear, hiding, shame, or feeling like we have to carry everything by ourselves.

But real healing happens when we get honest.
Freedom grows in safe community.
And accountability changes everything.

Sponsors, accountability, encouragement, and deeper healing are often found when we stop isolating and begin opening up with trusted people who truly understand the journey.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered recovery and discipleship ministry for anyone dealing with hurts, habits, or hang-ups — whether that’s addiction, anger, anxiety, grief, depression, codependency, loneliness, or broken relationships.

You don’t have to keep struggling alone. There is a place for you here. 🙌
