“Higher Up Texas has impacted my life in more ways than I can count.

I joined HUT in 2023 not knowing what to expect, but taking that leap of faith was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. During a time when I was working two jobs, running a small business, and trying to figure out school, HUT became a safe place for me. They listened when I needed to vent, encouraged me when I felt overwhelmed, and even let me stay in the office after hours to study. There were days they even let me rest on the small couch because they truly cared.

HUT honored me with the 2023 Alumni of the Year Award and blessed me with scholarships for both the fall and spring semesters. Most importantly, they believed in me when I didn’t always believe in myself.

Because of their support, I secured a position at UTMB Health, where I’ve now proudly worked for almost a year and a half. I am also on my way to becoming the first generation in my family to graduate college with an associate degree in Associate of Applied Science in Medical Imaging (Sonography).

Today kicks off School Year #8 of Higher Up Texas!

We’re starting the year strong at The La Marque High School where we’ve continued to grow since launching there in 2023. This year, HUT will be in three Economics & Government classes!

We’re also continuing our work at Texas City High School with one Economics & Government class.

And on Tuesday, Dickinson High School gets underway with HUT in all College Prep Math classes and Career Prep!

Eight years in with nearly 1,000 participants and we’re still educating, equipping and empowering young adults to elevate the community for all!

They supported me as I earned my first healthcare job in Labor and Delivery and continuously encouraged me to stay resilient, work hard, and always prioritize my well-being. Join us in celebrating Quintin Cain Jr., a proud Dickinson High School Class of 2026 graduate and an outstanding young man making his mark in the world of film and media. Quintin is currently enrolled at Georgia Highlands Community College pursuing Film Production. Quintin is on track to graduate in 2029 and aspires to become a Director of Production in Film.

As a video editor, entrepreneur, and photographer, Quintin is already building the skills and experience needed to achieve his dreams. He is always willing to take on new challenges and opportunities, truly embracing Higher Up Texas’s core value of eagerness. When asked what led him to choose his career path, he stated:

“The reason is that I’m in love with the art behind filmmaking, the creativity and outside thinking you can do, and how you can show real-world problems through art and creative storytelling.”

“Over the last few years HUT has impacted my life more than you think.

I’m high school I was shy. I knew everyone and everyone knew me but I only had a couple of close friends. I didn’t even know what I was gonna go with my life. It was my senior year and time was going by fast, I didn’t know what college to attend, or what I was going to study. I was also dealing with a lot on my personal life so I was lost.

It wasn’t until September of 2023 that HUT walked into my classroom. I never understood why they were here and at first I honestly would skip class the days that they were there. It wasn’t until Mrs.Gramm showed up and told her story something told me to stay. So I did.
And when I say that was the best decision I’ve ever made, it really was.

HUT has helped me learn how to budget, how to find apartments,and my FASFA. We were having a conversation with our Phase 1 teacher at the time Mrs.Amy and she’s the one who really convinced me to go to college. I graduated and moved on to Phase 2 and I love them so much. Phase 2 even helped me get my license!

So almost 3 years later, I’m now a Junior at Texas Southern University majoring in Education. I’m a proud member of the TSU Debate Team where I serve as Secretary. A member of Campus PALS; which is an organization that is dedicated to helping new students learn about the campus. I have my own apartment and I’m actually teaching on the side now at an International Preschool.

None of this would’ve happened if HUT didn’t push me out of my shell. Now look at me, I’m thriving.

HUT always says that I’m their ray of sunshine but if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t shine so bright without them.”

🫀 FREE Heart Screenings (Ages 11–24)

The Cody Stephens Foundation will also be onsite providing free ECG heart screenings for youth and young adults ages 11–24.

ECGs are one of the most effective tools for detecting hidden heart conditions and can help prevent sudden cardiac events. The screening takes just 10–15 minutes, is completely free, and could make all the difference.
