Hello everyone,
Praying you are all having a great start to this new year. Things have been very different for me, but I’m learning to adjust. I allowed myself time to recover and take care of me for a bit. Now its time to start again. Starting over has its challenges but it also gives us the opportunity to learn new things and step out of our comfort zone. I believe that if we have the will to do whatever we feel God is leading us to He can make it happen if we do our part. So here is to the new beginning.
For some time now I have been meditating on the story of Martha and Mary.
Look what is says here in Luke 10: 38-41
38 As they were traveling along, Jesus went into a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to him talk.
40 But Martha was upset about all the work she had to do. So, she asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work all by myself? Tell her to help me.”
41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha! You worry and fuss about a lot of things. 42 There’s only one thing you need.[a] Mary has made the right choice, and that one thing will not be taken away from her.”
Many of us can relate to the story of Martha and Mary, myself included. As a task-oriented person, I can so relate to Martha, but in my heart, I want to be a Mary! I want to be the one taking the time to sit and listen, but so often find myself with all the busy work that needs to be done every day. In these verses Martha was a little put out that Mary was just sitting there listing to Jesus. What’s funny is MARTHA is the one who asked Jesus into her house. Instead of taking the time to enjoy His presence she wanted everything to be perfect. You know us busy people. We must have it all done, and it needs to look good too. While MARY just sat there enjoying His presence. She was not worried about the meal or how great the house looked she just wanted to sit and listen!
Now don’t get me wrong I am all for a clean and orderly home, just ask my kids! They probably have issues today because of my OCD!!! Honestly, I want to be able to sit and listen with out the outside noise telling me to go CLEAN THE KITCHEN! LOL! I’m learning, and I’m not giving up. Every day is an opportunity to sit before God and listen. Sometimes I think we talk too much; we need to wait and listen.
I believe Martha’s motive was to be hospitable to Jesus as a guest in her home. As she saw all the tasks before her, she let that become more important than the presence of Jesus. While Mary’s desire was to listen to His every word. Martha even went so far as to TELL Jesus to make Mary help her. Oh my!! How many of us have done the very same thing. Well maybe we don’t tell Jesus what to do, or……, ok maybe we do. We can do better, right?
If it is our desire to sit and listen, then let’s make it our number one goal to honor His presence, no matter where we are. It’s a new beginning. You can do it!
In Him,
Margie
