My View
By Mr. T
I hope most of you had a chance to watch our athletic teams at some point this year. We have had a lot going on for the smallest public school in the state, and we are certainly proud of it. Our boys and girls basketball teams had good years. When it came to tournament time, both teams stepped up to the challenge. It was fun to watch them give everything they had. Both teams were beaten by very good teams, but we let them know we were there to compete. We had a great crowd at Stanton, which was quite a drive for us, but that never seems to stop anyone. The boys played at Mount Ayr. An even better crowd showed up there, and the place was rocking all night as the game was close. When the announcer asked if anyone from Bedford was there to support their team, they gave a quiet cheer. When asked if there were Diagonal fans in the house, the place erupted. That was so fun to see. It was even better to see that Mount Ayr was supporting us. Our kids looked like they were coordinating cheers with them. I know Mount Ayr has a big rivalry with Bedford which may have helped, but it was still great to watch.
Of course, we have more than basketball going on. Archery is in full swing as the team attempts to make another trip to the state tournament. Good luck to them as their season winds down. Another team that did very well was our robotics team. They did qualify for state for the second year in a row. They will be competing in Cedar Rapids this Saturday with a trip to Detroit on the line. They have had a long season and have done quite well. Naturally, the state event will be even tougher, but I bet the kids are ready to go for it. This is quite a program and really gives them an introduction to the engineering world. Congratulations Hotspots and good luck this weekend.
After writing about the above, I can’t help but think about the state putting pressure on us to close down. I can only ask “Why”? It really doesn’t make any sense to me. Talk about a good education. I’m sure you read earlier how our school performs in the top 15% of the state. Honestly, you can’t do much better than that. Another measure ranked the high schools in our area. There was not one school that did any better than us. We were tied with some, but no school did better. Yet the state thinks we are too small. I feel they need to really look at what is going on here and give it some thought. If the purpose of school is to give an education and prepare our youth for what lies ahead, we’ve got it. We don’t need security officers roaming our halls, metal detectors at our doors, or students worrying about someone bringing a gun to school. There is more to a school than size, and we prove it every day!
