Your student might come home and talk about the soft launch of the new cell phone law. In case you missed the email, please see below. I am hopeful the day was pleasant for everyone and that all of our Panther Families can be supportive of the legislated change:
We are writing to inform you of important changes to our classroom expectations regarding cell phone use at DeWitt High School. Beginning Monday, April 6, 2026 (the first day of NW4), we will implement new guidelines for cell phones in classrooms. These changes represent our commitment to supporting student focus, engagement, and academic success, while working to align our practice with Michigan's new statewide law on wireless communication devices in classrooms, which takes effect during the 2026-2027 school year. Our hope is that this "soft start" will allow for data collection and troubleshooting as we work toward district compliance in regard to MCL 380.1303a .
New Classroom Expectations
Beginning April 6, 2026, the following expectations apply to all students in all classes:
Upon entry to class: Students will place their cell phones in a designated docking station. Cell phones will not be accessible during instructional time.
During class: Students will not have access to their phones unless the classroom teacher approves their use for a specific educational purpose.
Students may use their cell phone during passing time and lunch.
Compliance and Redirection Process
We believe in supporting our students as they adjust to these expectations. The following progressive process will be used for any instances of non-compliance:
First instance: A reminder from the teacher that cell phones cannot be used during instructional time.
Second or subsequent instance: Parent contact to discuss compliance and reinforce the expectations.
Continued non-compliance: Administrative referral, which may result in loss of cell phone privileges at school.
Exceptions
We recognize that some students may have specific needs related to cell phone access. The following students are exempt from this expectation:
Students with documented accommodations in a Section 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP) that specifically address cell phone or wireless device use
Students enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs who may require device access for language support
Students with medical management plans that require cell phone access (e.g., diabetes monitoring)
How You Can Help
We ask for your partnership in supporting this transition. Please:
