The Dewitt PBA membership pauses today to remember all those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001 as a result of the terrorist attacks. We also honor those who passed away in the years since due to the after effects of the response and recovery effort. Twenty years ago this morning, thousands of emergency first responders including Law Enforcement Officers, Firefighters, and Emergency Medical Services providers moved toward the respective scenes of unfathomable chaos and danger as most civilians sought positions of relative safety farther away. 412 of those responders made the ultimate sacrifice and never came home to their families.

In the twenty years since, Dewitt Police Officers have faithfully served locally in our community, as well as nationally and internationally through military service. Members of this PBA have deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, Cuba, and various other key locations in support of the Global War on Terrorism. We are especially honored to host a local 9/11 Memorial Site just outside our Police Department to memorialize the lives lost on that tragic day.

While we pray for peace, as your local Police Officers, we will always run toward danger to protect those we have never met. We are proud to serve you, privileged to work with you. Today, and every day, we stand in solidarity with all Americans who remember this world changing event, and the years of war that have unfolded since.

The Dewitt Police Benevolent Association offers its thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and coworkers of Ofc. Ella French. She was murdered in the line of duty and had a two month old child. We also pray that the other Officer who was shot and in critical condition makes a speedy and full recovery!

Police Officer Ella French
End of Watch: August 7, 2021

We will never forget the true bravery she exemplified as she laid her life down to protect others.

Please hold her family, loved ones and fellow Chicago Police officers in your thoughts as we grieve the loss of this hero.

Please also pray for her wounded partner, who is in the hospital fighting for his life. We're asking for everyone to lift this officer and his family as we pray for his recovery.

Sometimes, good people just need a little help to get their life back on track. India is a single mother trying to better her life and that for her daughter. One of our Officers has been working with her to get services she needs, and he asked us to share her fundraiser. The proceeds will help her buy a much needed vehicle to get around and go to and from her new job.

Hi everybody!! My name is India and as much as I hate to share my personal life I ha… INDIA WAYMAN needs your support for In need of a vehicle to get to work

UPDATE TO OUR MAY 15TH POST: Since posting about the homeless family that our Officers helped, we continued to check on their welfare at the hotel we placed them at. In the days following the initial encounter, other Dewitt Officers who were not initially involved took it upon themselves to buy groceries, hygiene items, toys (a lot of them!), and even a pre-paid mobile phone, all at their own expense, and delivered them to the family at their hotel. Additionally, the mother was connected with social services in the area and is working on applying for a job. It now appears that the family is on the right track to get back on their feet! Thank you all for the support!

They say that photos tell a story. In this case we see one of our Dewitt Police Officers kneeling down to chalk a sidewalk with a two year old. What you don’t see are the other Police Officers just out of frame on the scene with three more children and her mother. They are assisting them with finding housing, diapers, and food since they are homeless, out of money, and now living in an open air parking lot with no where else to go. Several bystanders noticed what was going on and came to offer assistance in the way of food, money, and toys for the kids. The Dewitt Police Benevolent Association paid for a week stay at a local hotel so that the kids have a stable place to stay, and Officers can follow up with the mother and Social Services to get them a permanent home. One Officer gathered diapers, new clothing, food, and toys from his home and returned to the hotel to deliver them. Police Officers do good deeds daily, and this one photo of an Officer comforting a toddler during a stressful time speaks volumes. We wish to thank all the Officers and community members that went above and beyond to help out a family in their time of need!

Earlier today, the Dewitt Police Department responded to a suspected vehicle fire within the Town. The young man in the vehicle was nervous that it was smoking and was concerned for his mother's safety. To help take his mind off the stressful situation, one of our PBA members gave him the grand tour of a nearby Police car, to include the opportunity to test the sirens! Thanks to our Officer for making this child's day brighter amid a scary situation!

Earlier this afternoon, after finishing a call for service at the East Syracuse Walmart, several of our PBA members noticed a local Girl Scout Troop selling boxes of cookies for their annual fundraiser. They told our members that this was their last day of selling and that they were close to their goal, but not quite there yet. The Dewitt PBA then purchased 100 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies, and asked that they be handed out for free to 100 different people walking by as a sign of good will. We were glad to help these young entrepreneurs get one step closer to achieving their goal!
