Healing Hearts Through Hooves is officially beginning fundraising for our first veterans retreat, Operation Restore, taking place September 17–20, 2026, at Ol’ Mel’s Farm in Deville, Louisiana.

This retreat is designed to give veterans a peaceful place to step away from daily stress, reconnect with others, and experience healing through horses, farm animals, nature, fellowship, and rest.

Our goal is to provide this experience at little to no cost to participating veterans through community donations and sponsorships.

If you would like to support Operation Restore and help us serve those who have served our country, donations can be made here:

Donate Here👉🏻 https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/donate-to-heal-hearts-2

Every donation helps provide lodging, meals, activities, animal-assisted experiences, and meaningful support for veterans attending this retreat.

Thank you for helping us make Operation Restore possible.

The Healing Power of Animals

Animals influence human well-being in ways that are both physiological and psychological. This is not abstract—there is measurable impact.

1. Physiological Regulation

Interaction with animals can reduce stress markers. Studies in oxytocin show increases during human–animal bonding, which correlates with lowered blood pressure, decreased cortisol, and improved emotional stability. Even brief contact—petting a dog, grooming a horse—can shift the nervous system from a heightened state to a calmer baseline.

2. Emotional Safety and Nonjudgment

Animals do not evaluate or criticize. For individuals dealing with trauma, grief, or burnout, this absence of judgment creates a controlled environment for emotional expression. This is a key reason Animal-Assisted Therapy is used in clinical and non-clinical settings.

3. Grounding and Present-Moment Awareness

Working with animals requires attention to the present. Horses, in particular, respond to subtle cues—posture, breathing, tone. This forces participants into real-time awareness, a principle closely aligned with mindfulness. The result is reduced rumination and improved emotional regulation.

4. Restoration of Trust and Connection

For people who have experienced loss or high-stress environments (military, healthcare, first responders), trust can be impaired. Animals provide a low-risk way to rebuild relational confidence. The bond forms without complexity, which can later translate into improved human relationships.

5. Sense of Purpose and Competence

Caring for an animal—feeding, grooming, leading—creates immediate, tangible feedback. This supports a sense of usefulness and capability, especially for individuals who feel disconnected from their identity or role.

Why Horses Are Especially Powerful

Horses are frequently used because they are large, sensitive, and highly attuned to human emotion. Their responses are immediate and honest. This creates a feedback loop where individuals can see the impact of their internal state externally—something that is difficult to replicate in traditional talk-based settings.
