Detroit has long been a city that honors those who served.

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, one of Detroit’s oldest pieces of public art and one of the first monuments in the United States dedicated to Civil War veterans, stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made to protect our nation.

Announced in 1865, the monument was created to honor Michigan’s soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Michigan’s largest city, Detroit, was chosen as its home.

As we prepare to gather in Detroit for the 2026 Medal of Honor Convention, we honor the heroes who answered the call to serve and the legacy they continue to inspire.

Did You Know?

The Medal of Honor isn't a single medal. There are three official designs awarded by different military departments: the Army, Navy (also awarded to Marines and Coast Guard members), and Air Force. While each medal has its own unique design and symbolism, they all recognize the same extraordinary acts of conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty.

While the medals themselves differ in design, all recipients wear the same recognizable light blue neck ribbon with thirteen white stars, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies.

The medal pictured here is the Navy medal.
