To help children and families shape their own futures. THE MAGNITUDE OF NEED
More than 100,000 children in Greater Detroit are vulnerable to the effects of mental health disorders, abuse, neglect, and poverty. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
• 1 in 5 children have a diagnosable mental disorder
• 1 in 59 children has been identified with Autism

Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.
• Every 28 seconds, a child is placed in foster care
• Every 18 minutes, a child is abused or neglected
• Less than 50% of greater Detroit’s children arrive at kindergarten ready-to-learn

• Children served: Nearly 7,500 annually
• Ages served: Birth through 21
• Staff: Over 300 therapists, caseworkers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and support staff

• Volunteers: More than 1,800 dedicated volunteers

What began as a way to honor a sister became a gift to hundreds of children. 💙

In memory of her sister Shannon, Sherry Soenen collected hundreds of brand-new children’s shoes and socks through Shannon’s Shoe Closet to donate to kids here at The Children’s Center.

The shoe drive has been a wonderful success and such a meaningful way to honor Shannon’s love of shoes, her life as a teacher, and the joy she brought to so many. 👟💙

Some evenings remind us just how special our community is. ❤️

Our Donor Appreciation Reception was one of those evenings.

It was a chance to pause, celebrate the people who stand beside The Children’s Center, and simply say thank you.

Every child who finds hope.
Every parent who finds strength.
Every family who feels supported.

It happens because people like you choose to believe in children and families and invest in their future.

We were also honored to present the 2026 Heart of Hope Award to Chui Karega, whose nearly five decades of generosity, leadership, advocacy, and commitment to The Children’s Center have made a lasting difference in our community.

Chui represents what it means to believe in our mission for the long term, and we are so grateful for the legacy he continues to build.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and, most importantly, to every donor who makes our work possible. 💙
