Hope House Detroit

Hope House Detroit A home where youth in Detroit can go after school, on weekends or on summer days to be in community with others. real. crazy. love. In the name of Jesus.
(1)

Hope House Detroit is a blending of community and fun, laughter and conversation, activities and food, personal and communal development, old and young, and love. A place where people, kids and adults alike, are known, respected and loved. Our vision is to encourage and accompany children and young people toward their potential

Hope House Detroit was founded in 2010 by Gary and Becky Gentry, soon

after they joined Hope Community Church in Detroit. Their love for the community, coupled with a life-long passion for the encouragement of children and youth toward their potential, led to cherished relationships with young people that became Hope House Detroit: a community center for kids. We strive to be a highly relational, process-focused ministry where we journey alongside kids in very intentional ways. Our strategy is to walk together; talk together, play together; and pray together. At Hope House, we run on the power of human connection to change the world for all of us–student AND teacher. Relationship, via Jesus, is the foundation of our marathon…together.

After more than a decade of ministry at Hope House, Jessica Brown will be transitioning out of her full time role as she follows God’s calling into counseling.

Jessica joined our very first class of interns and became part of the foundation on which Hope House was built. Over the years she welcomed thousands of guests, led countless groups and volunteers, mentored interns, invested in students and families, wrote newsletters, designed and maintained our website, and helped share the Hope House story with supporters across the country.

Around Hope House, we’ve often joked that Jessica is our Mary Poppins. She brings warmth, joy, creativity, and order wherever she goes.

As Jessica completes her Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan, she is preparing for a new season of serving others through therapy and mental health care. She will be transitioning out of her full-time role at Hope House and will continue serving in a part-time capacity through March 2027 to help support the ministry through this transition.

Jessica, thank you for your faithful service, friendship, leadership, and love. We are incredibly proud of you and excited for what God has ahead.

☀️ Sunshine. Strength. Compassion.
❤️ Once a Hope House kid, always a Hope House kid.

Did you know that March is National Reading Month? 📚

We'll be celebrating all month long. Every time a kid walks into a Hope House program, they’ll get to go home with a new book!

We’ve stocked up on so many great options, and we can’t wait to see the excitement as kids find the book that’s just right for them.

March is going to be full of imagination, discovery, and the joy of reading!

Here is another activity from our retreat that we'd like to share and invite you to try out with your family or team!

Family Activity: Protect the Yes

Why: This helps your family name what matters most and make simple choices that keep everyone rested, connected, and cared for.

How to Do It: Gather together. Take one deep breath and remind each other: this is about care, not rules.

Talk together: What do we want to protect as a family this year? (time together, rest, fun, faith, kindness) What feels too busy or tiring right now?

Let everyone share, including kids. Listen and affirm, no need to solve everything.
Choose a few simple agreements:
One thing we will protect.
One thing we will do less of.
One thing we will try differently.

Remember: Protecting what matters may mean slowing down or saying no sometimes, and that’s okay.

Closing Thought: When you protect your “yes,” you’re choosing care, connection, and a healthier family rhythm.

Amy and Riley spent time last week in training learning how to lead a Reaching Higher course, and it was deeply aligned with the heart of Hope House!! It was positive, hope-filled, and centered on helping the kids see their potential.

We believe kids grow when the adults around them keep growing too. Grateful for leaders who keep investing, learning, and bringing back tools that help our kids dream bigger and believe more deeply in who they are becoming.

Hey Susie, Ann, Steve, and Troy, thanks for investing in Amy and Riley and bringing Reaching Higher to our kids!

During our staff retreat, we spent time engaging in a variety of exercises that invited reflection, both individually and together as a team. These practices helped us pause, listen, and notice where we are and where we’re headed.

We’d love to share a few of these reflective exercises with you, whether you choose to try them on your own, with your family, or with your team. Here's one to start!

Family Exercise: What I Need Right Now

Purpose: A short check-in to help everyone share what helps them feel supported at home and in life.

How to Do It: Find a calm moment to sit together.

Each person shares:
1. One thing I need less of (for kids: something that feels hard or tiring)
2. One thing I need more of (rest, play, help, quiet, time together, etc.)
3. One thing I need from our family
There are no right or wrong answers.
Take turns sharing. Everyone listens, no interrupting, fixing, or correcting.
Thank each person for being honest.

Close: Choose one small way to support each other this week. Come back to this conversation when needs change.
