EXTREME HEAT WARNING

The next several days could be deadly for pets.

From Tuesday, June 30 through Friday, July 3, dangerous temperatures are expected across Detroit. Every summer, dogs and other animals suffer heatstroke because they don't have access to the basics they need to survive.

If you know someone with an outdoor dog, please share this post. It could save a life.

Here are the most important things to remember:

• Fresh, cool water must be available at all times. Check it often and refill it throughout the day.

• Dogs MUST have shade. A dog house is not shade. In direct sunlight, dog houses trap heat and can become dangerously hot inside. Dogs need a shaded area where air can circulate.

• If possible, bring dogs inside during the hottest part of the day, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We know many Detroit homes don't have air conditioning, and sometimes inside can feel almost as hot as outside. Even so, a basement is often the coolest place in the home and can provide life-saving relief from the sun.

Heat is dangerous for people and animals alike. It only takes a short time for a dog to become overheated, and heatstroke can quickly become fatal.

While you're filling your pets' water bowls, please consider leaving a bowl of fresh water outside for wildlife and stray animals, too. During extreme heat, that simple act of kindness can make all the difference.

We are heading into dangerously hot weather that is forecast for the next SEVERAL days. With actual temps close to or at 100° and heat index of 105-110°. It’s going to be BRUTAL!

‼️Do not walk your dogs during the next several days. They are OK to go without it. It is way too hot. Not only is the pavement too hot, but the temperature is dangerous for them. Remember, they are not like humans, they are not able to sweat as a way to control body temperature. Be kind and leave them inside in the air-conditioning.

‼️Do not take your pets in the car and think you can leave them inside while you run into the store for just a minute. Temperatures rise rapidly in a vehicle, even with the windows down. It is literally like an oven. Be kind and leave your pets home in the air conditioning. 

‼️If you have dogs, bring them inside, put them in the basement. It is going to be wayyyyy too hot outside.

‼️If you refuse to bring your dogs in (which we hope you won’t) make sure they have a well shaded area and make sure they have access to plenty of water that is refreshed throughout the day.

‼️If your dog is old, it is particularly at risk of heat stroke. It important to bring them out of the heat and into the cool basement or air-conditioning. 

You are responsible for the care of your animals and their well-being. You can be charged w animal neglect or cruelty if you fail to provide adequate care.

Residents, please keep an eye out for animals in your area that may need help. Please remember the animals have no voice and they are reliant on us to report neglect. If you see an animal not being cared for, please call the police or message our page we will do our best to make sure that the authorities or outreach groups receive the messages. 

If you have outside cats that you can’t possibly bring inside, please make sure they have access to plenty of water. Cats who have free range are better able to seek out places to get relief from the heat, unlike a dog who is confined or tethered, however, they still need plenty of water and it needs to be refreshed during the day.

HEATSTROKE is no joke for animals that live outside. Their bodies Literally COOK from the inside .

IF YOU ARE HOT YOUR DOG IS HOT.

ITS GOING TO BE HOT. 🥵 BRING YOUR DOGS INSIDE. Give them fresh cold water every so often. Make sure they have access to SHADE. NO WALKS.
