General Baker Institute is inspired by the life of the late General Gordon Baker Jr., a life-long Detroiter who died in 2014, and his life of activism and independent scholarship. In the late 1960’s, he was a founder of DRUM (Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement) and the League of Revolutionary Black Workers (LRBW), and led a life of scholarship and activism that inspired countless others. There is

a need for community leadership with educational and historic frameworks for social action. There is also a need to augment the education of young people who would be greatly served by the independent scholarship and social activism inspired by Baker. Many of the challenges that we face in society - and in Detroit in particular – could be best met with the kind of illumined mind that General Baker represented.

We recently found out that Highland Park has started doing water shutoffs. This is a violation of a 2019 settlement agreement. Highland Park, has what many would call a water affordability plan but the water department isn’t letting its residents know. You can see the plan in the second flyer which is taken from their website. Please join us next Tuesday September 6 at 7:00 pm for the city council meeting. Council meeting starts at 7:0pm but public comments are at the end. Please spread the word and if you know anyone living in HP let them know about the payment plan.
