General Baker Institute is inspired by the life of the late General Gordon Baker Jr., a life-long Detroiter who died in 2014, and his life of activism and independent scholarship. In the late 1960โ€™s, he was a founder of DRUM (Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement) and the League of Revolutionary Black Workers (LRBW), and led a life of scholarship and activism that inspired countless others. There is

a need for community leadership with educational and historic frameworks for social action. There is also a need to augment the education of young people who would be greatly served by the independent scholarship and social activism inspired by Baker. Many of the challenges that we face in society - and in Detroit in particular โ€“ could be best met with the kind of illumined mind that General Baker represented.
