Today we're bringing awareness to the disparities in Black maternal healrh.

Black women in the United States face a pregnancy-related mortality rate 2.9 to 3 times higher than white women, and these stark disparities persist across all levels of education and income.

Over 80% of pregnancy-related deaths among Black women are considered preventable, pointing to systemic healthcare bias, communication breakdowns, and dismissals of patient pain rather than individual lifestyle choices.

Listen to Me (linked below) is the story of three Black women navigating pregnancy within a system not built to protect them. The film challenges us to shift the narrative from crisis response to reimagine maternal health as a continuum of care, justice, healing and radical listening.

Today our Chapter members educated women on the importance of getting an annual mammogram. Chapter member Sonya Jackson held a session after church to show women how to perform self breast examination.

Today we participated in Henry Ford Health and the Pi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's Champion Your Wellness: Take Charge of Your Health community health fair.

Chapter members participated in various parts of the fair. Our chapter's table specifically talked about kidney disease prevention, management, APOL1 Mediated Kidney Disease, and how to become a Kidney Health Coach through the American Kidney Fund. Our undergraduate members from Lambda Chi Alpha Beta (University of Michigan) joined us! 😍
