OPEN CALL FOR AUDITIONS FOR 'FORGOTTEN: MURDER AT THE ROUGE PLANT:

“Forgotten: The Murder at the Ford Rouge Plant” is a 90-minute musical set in the 1930s as workers battled hunger and homelessness while organizing unions. Scenes depict the Ford Hunger March, the Flint sit-down strike, the Battle of the Overpass, and more.

The show is written for nine leads (three women, six men) and nine chorus members.

Historical characters include Rev. Lewis and Ella Bradford, in their mid-40s; Henry and Clara Ford, in their mid-70s; Fr. Charles Coughlin and Harry Bennett, in their mid-40s; and Ford hunger marchers and workers of various ages.

The lead, Lewis Bradford, a part-time pastor at Detroit’s Central United Methodist Church, hosts “The Forgotten Man’s Radio Hour,” where jobless workers can tell their story. He also works at Ford’s River Rouge plant, where he advocates for workers’ rights. He was found dead in 1937 on the plant floor, leading to an investigation where, many years later, his death is called a likely homicide.

Open auditions for the 2025 revival of ‘Forgotten’ will take place on July 11 and 12 at St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, 8850 Woodward Ave. (between Holbrook and King Streets), Detroit:

Friday, July 11, 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

Saturday, July 12, 12 noon - 5 p.m.

You can hear some of the 22 songs and see photos from a previous production of “Forgotten” on YouTube at Bill Meyer Music Forgotten: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDp-HEpw4ZA

You may bring music to the audition. A pianist will be present. No auditions with a recording. If you’re not picked for a lead, you may be considered for the chorus.

The show will be presented October 10-12 at Marygrove Theater in Detroit. Rehearsals will begin September 3 and will be scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays, with final rehearsals at the theater the week of October 6.

All cast members will be compensated.

AUDITION CALL FOR 'FORGOTTEN'

If you — or anyone you know — have always had a longing to be on stage, here’s a great opportunity!
Auditions are coming up for the October Detroit production of the labor jazz opera “Forgotten.” There are nine lead roles and nine chorus roles to fill. We expect to use a blend of Equity professionals and local talent. Everyone will be paid.
“Forgotten” tells the story of how Detroit became a union town in the late 1930s and 1940s, and historical characters include Rev. Lewis Bradford and his family; Henry and Clara Ford; Father Coughlin; and Harry Bennett. Also portrayed are unemployed workers who were part of events like the Ford Hunger March, the Battle of the Overpass, and the Flint sit-down strike. Composer Steve Jones has written 22 songs in a jazz/bluesy style to tell the “Forgotten” story. This will be the third revival of the show in Detroit since its 2004 premiere. The last production was in 2010.
Elise Bryant will return to direct. Lynn Marie Smith is assistant director. Bill Meyer is music director, leading a local AFM band. The production goes up for three performances starting Friday, October 10, at Marygrove Theater.
We are also looking for volunteers to serve as ticket-takers, ushers, parking guides, green room hosts, and more.
Auditions will take place Friday, July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 12, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., with call-backs on Sunday, July 13 at 3 p.m. all at St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Church, 8850 Woodward (between Holbrook and King).
So, loosen up those vocal chords, get ready to move around the stage, and be part of this amazing show. Contact Lynn Marie Smith (313-320-5946 or [email protected]) if you have question or want to nail down an audition time. If you want to volunteer to work at the performances, please contact House Manager Brenda Moon (call or text 248-219-3697, or email her at [email protected]).

Join the Michigan Labor History Society this summer as we continue the revival of Eugene V. Debs Memorial Kazoo Night! Taking place on June 24, 2025 at Comerica Park during the Tigers vs. Athletics baseball game, we will celebrate the labor movement and the legacy of hero to the workingman, Eugene V. Debs.

This event originally ran from the early eighties to 1999, named after Debs -- the labor activist, socialist, and 5-time presidential candidate. Last year’s event was a grand slam, with 60+ people joining the kazoo orchestra in perfect disharmony. This year, by popular demand, the event returns to the bleachers. In addition, this Debs Night serves as a fundraiser, with a portion of each ticket going to the revival of the labor musical Forgotten!

Get your tickets here: https://www.gofevo.com/event/Michiganlabor7
Pick up your kazoo before the game at Harry's Detroit Bar and Grill (2482 Clifford St, Detroit, MI 48201) from 5-6:30.
