Math Corps

Math Corps A nationally recognized academic enrichment and mentoring program dedicated to student success!

The WSU Math Corps is a combined academic enrichment and mentoring program that brings middle and high school students from Detroit public schools together, with college students, to learn mathematics from each other, as well as to interact with professional mathematicians in a university setting. It is based on the dream of creating a self-perpetuating “corps” of students from middle school throu

gh college, who excel academically, hold values that breed success in general, and who, through strong mentoring relationships, pass their knowledge and their values on to younger students, who in turn do the same. In a world where the dreams of children are so often unfulfilled or not even encouraged, and where the obstacles to success are so daunting, the Math Corps has, from the beginning, been about making a difference and changing lives. At its core, the Math Corps is about a very simple but unwavering belief—that all children have a unique and special greatness within them, and that through hard work and a commitment to excellence, and with the support of a caring community, this greatness can be realized.

Something remarkable happened in Flint this summer.

We launched a brand-new Math Corps camp there, our newest site, and within weeks, it looked and felt like our oldest camp in Detroit. The same energy, the same commitment to persistence over perfection, the same students showing up for each other around the whiteboard.

We're incredibly proud of what site director Adrienne J. Nathan and her team built in Flint this summer. Welcome to the Math Corps family!

A proud moment for Math Corps Dearborn! 🎉

Our camp director Yunus got to sit on a panel with Ballmer Group leadership during their visit to Michigan — and even met Steve Ballmer himself! 💙

Yunus joined parents, students, and educators to share what a DiscoverWorks summer really looks like — the learning, the growth, and the real difference it makes for our students and families.

When funders, educators, and communities come together to listen to one another, kids win. 🙌 So grateful to Ballmer Group for making space to hear from the people doing this work every day — and so proud of Yunus for representing us so well.

Here's to another summer of showing up for our kids! ☀️

This week Math Corps was honored to have two members of its team, Laura Richardson and board member Ravi Shukla, get invited to the Congressional Staff Briefing on the Summer For All Act this Wednesday, July 15, in the Dirksen Senate Building.

Introduced by Senator Chris Murphy and Senator Andy Kim, the bill would create dedicated federal funding for nonprofit-run summer programs serving students from low-income communities — the kind of programs that keep kids learning, connected, and supported when school is out.

For over 30 years, Math Corps has watched what a summer can do. Our students don't just hold their ground over the break, they gain. They're taught by high schoolers who were once middle schoolers in this same program, in a family that keeps pulling people back in. That's what's possible when summer programs get the investment they deserve.

It was a privilege to be in the room with people working to make that kind of summer available to far more kids.

Thank you to National Summer Learning Association for the work you do year-round.

This week is National Summer Learning Association Week (July 6–10), and honestly, it's the perfect excuse to brag on our campers for a second.

Right now hundreds of kids across Detroit and our partner sites are spending their summer mornings doing math, not because they have to, but because they want to. For a lot of them, Math Corps is the difference between a summer that sets them back and a summer that sets them up. Free tutoring, mentorship, and a community that believes in them, all summer long.

That's what Summer Learning Week is about: making sure every kid, regardless of zip code, gets a shot at opportunities that keep them learning, growing, and excited about what's next.

Proud to be part of this work. 📚

We are so grateful for our friends at Henkel! 🎒

Every year, Henkel employees come together to purchase and stuff backpacks full of supplies, and deliver them directly to Math Corps sites across the country. It's one of our favorite traditions, and it means the world to our students and staff.

This kind of hands-on generosity is what makes the Math Corps community so special. Thank you, Henkel, for showing up year after year and investing in the future of our young mathematicians. We couldn't do this without you. ❤️
