One month later, we’re still feeling the energy from the Detroit Chinatown Block Party.

This year, we welcomed more attendees, more vendors and even more of our community to Cass and Peterboro. But the Block Party has always been about something bigger than one day.

The Detroit Chinatown Vision Committee is a volunteer-led initiative working to revitalize the neighborhood surrounding Detroit’s historic Chinatown and help build a thriving Pan-Asian district — one that honors the history and contributions of Detroit’s Asian American community while creating a vibrant neighborhood for generations to come.

We’re incredibly grateful to the sponsors, community partners, vendors, volunteers and attendees who brought this year’s Block Party to life. Your support helps build awareness, strengthen community connections and move this larger vision forward.

Not enough photos can capture all the work, love, joy, and community that went into our 2nd annual .

The was formed by Sandy Fatt & Francis Grunow following the demolition of the On Leong / Chinese Merchants Association building— one week before the demolition of Dabl’s MBAD African Bead Museum building. Those losses reminded us how important it is to preserve places, stories, & community memory.

Our volunteer committee is connected by a shared desire to honor the generations who came before us and the values we believe the Chinese Merchants Association represented: steadfast community care, mutual support, treating one another like family, self-determination, and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. We’re grateful to our elders and ancestors for reminding us how connected our immigrant stories are in navigating today’s complicated world.

Grateful to work alongside a team that builds the infrastructure necessary to host a one-day event that is much more than a festival. The Block Party reimagines what is possible & test values of inclusion, diversity, culture, and play, and demonstrates the humanity of a vibrant Pan-Asian community.

Tomorrow at the Detroit Chinatown Block Party, discover the people and businesses helping shape Detroit’s vibrant Asian community.

Meet Kim Tran, founder of Sen Kava . Originally from San Jose, Kim now calls Detroit home and is bringing her Vietnamese heritage and botanical beverages—including drinks featuring kava—to this year’s Detroit Chinatown Block Party on Saturday, July 25.

She’s one of 60+ food, beverage, and merchandise vendors you’ll find throughout the day, reflecting the diversity of Asian cultures while honoring the history of Detroit’s original Chinatown and celebrating its future as a Pan-Asian neighborhood.

“Asian American cuisine, performances and art will fill Peterboro Street and Cass Avenue in Detroit on Saturday July 25 for the second annual Detroit Chinatown Block Party, harkening back to a time when the city's Chinatown district thrived.

The block party ‘is meant to celebrate the history of Chinese culture and Asian culture in general in the neighborhood, and bring the Asian community together as well as people from all backgrounds together,’ said Jacob Molewyk, a committee member of the Detroit Chinatown Vision Committee (DCVC), which plans the block party.

The block party will be coming back ‘bigger and better,’ said Lisa Yee-Litzenberg, who also serves as a member of the DCVC.

Yee-Litzenberg said the event drew more than 4,000 people last year. It is free to attend.

Attendees can expect 60 local Asian American food and merchandise vendors, special Chinese character tattoos from Iconic Tattoo, traditional dragon and lion dance performances and a 3D painting of the previous Chinese Merchants Association building.”
