Members of Strong Towns Detroit got an up-close look at downtown Detroit’s historic parking spaces with Detroiters for Parking Reform co-founder Francis Grunow.

Hear what Detroiters for Parking Reform is working on, what we saw during the Park(ing) Day tour, and how you can get involved.

Parking reform has been a consistent topic of conversation at Strong Towns meetings and events. We have advocated for legislation to eliminate or lower parking minimums, as well as helped projects get the exemptions they need to build more space for people instead of cars.

Behold! Michigan Avenue ... a road with so much traffic that it needs *checks notes* four lanes for cars?

As we check on project timelines to keep residents and our org. members informed, we realized the construction start time for rebuilding US-12 Michigan Avenue is quickly approaching.

We applaud the Michigan Department of Transportation for the improvements in safer street design and changes to accommodate alternative modes of transportation.

However, we cannot help but reminisce the previous plan that included a dedicated rapid bus lane. Your social media admin. remembers Strong Towns Detroit member Sean being quoted by WXYZ after a public meeting, "We are going to be able to build the first bus rapid transit line in Detroit. I felt a lot of excitement in there."

Some progress is better than nothing. 👷🏿🌳

The Villages CDC polled residents and found overwhelming opposition to the cancellation of the proposed affordable housing development near the Butzel Rec Center on Kercheval, with the overwhelming majority of the 130 participants living nearby in the Villages and Islandview neighborhoods.

What do you think? Should a project, that was only possible because of financing for affordable housing on city owned land, be able to be nixed by a few people throughout the city?

Please plan ahead! Michigan Central has announced upcoming roadway and infrastructure improvements at the intersection of Vernor Highway and 17th Street. Work will include roadway reconstruction, storm utility improvements, curb and pavement replacement, and other site improvements.
