BuildOn WSU

BuildOn WSU The Official Chapter of buildOn at Wayne State University, in Detroit, MI. A movement empowering students to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy.

We empower U.S. urban youth in the city of Detroit to transform their neighborhoods and the world through intensive community service. Our unique service model focuses on education both within the U.S. and internationally. Globally, we’re constructing a new school every three days in some of the economically poorest countries around the world. By raising funds for the construction of primary schoo

ls worldwide, including Nicaragua, Haiti, Malawi, Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso, we provide children, parents, and grandparents the opportunity to read, write, and pursue higher education. In Detroit, we participate in a variety of community service projects, including: tutoring elementary school students, volunteering at soup kitchens and shelters, raising awareness on health issues and gender inequality, and more! Each year with university students across the States, we also travel to an under-resourced village in a developing nation, where we spend one full week living with host families. This is known as "Trek". We work HAND-IN-HAND with the villagers on their new school; digging holes, sifting sand, painting beams, tying rebar, carrying bricks, and so on and so forth. buildOn is unique in that you actually see where your fund-raised money is going!
