Making Kwanza -Over the Weekend at the Malcom X Cultural Center, The African Holiday of Kwanzaa or first fruits was celebrated. Traditionally, Throughout African Society. It was a time when Black people came together to celebrate the harvest fruits of the year. The Holiday surrounded by it symbols, The Mkeka, Straw Mat; The Kinara, a candle Holder, and Mshumaa Na Saba the candles, were (from left Maghan Sundiata Ifaniyi Keita of the Amen-Ra drummer Troupe; The Rev. Dance & Drum Demonstration

Maghan Sundiata Ifaniyi Keita & his two year old son Maghan Sowandé Ifaníyí Keïta team up up to play African Drums at a Demonstration of African Dance & Drums Wednesday at The Bryant Community Center.
Keita is the Director of the Omowale Cultural Society. The Drum and Dance Sessions was part of Bryant Community Center Bi-Weekly ‘resource person’ visits.

Maghan Sundiata Ifaniyi Keita of Detroit, a member of the Sun Drummers group, performs Thursday Evening along State Street near the University of Michigan Daig. The group, which drew a large crowd of art fair patrons, performs West Africa Rhythms music mixed with a little bit of funk.

Black History Month:

Celebration: African American across the state begin an examination of thier achievements and heritage.

Tiye Keita and her mother Kahemba Keita performed a dance from West Africa Monday at induction ceremonies for outstanding African American at Detroit Heritage Cultural Center.

Michigan’s African-American Civic and Cultural Organization begin a monthlong celebration today to recognize Black History Month.

Hundreds of events are scheduled throughout recognizing the achievements of African Americans.

Highlights include the Feb 10 premiere of the Original Showtime cable television film, Assault at West Point at the Detroit Institute of Arts part of the proceeds from the screenings will be donated to Detroit’s Museum of African American History.

The Museum located in the City cultural center began its own celebration Monday, including a special performance or traditional African dances and the unveiling of it special Wall of Fame.
