Detroit Area Restorative Justice Center We work collectively to build a culture of healing, transformation, and peace in the midst of conflict within ourselves, Detroit, and Southeast Michigan.

We do this by:
- Offering Restorative Justice/Restorative practices training
- Bringing experienced and emerging Restorative Justice/Restorative Practices practitioners together for shared learning and networking
- Facilitating community-building and grassroots peacemaking circles within schools, community organizations and neighborhoods
- Advocating for organizations, schools, and communities to use restorative justice practices to resolve conflict and justly hold people accountable for harm

Meet Josephine Boakye !!!

Josephine Boakye (Jo) is a Co-Director at the Detroit Area Restorative Justice Center. Jo is a restorative justice practitioner, social justice educator & facilitator, and level 1 Reiki practitioner. Prior to this, Jo has worked in youth mentorship & development, LGBTQ rights advocacy & education, and community development. Jo remains motivated by and grounded in her Ghanaian ancestry as she continues to nurture her life's work as a social change agent. She has a deep passion for personal and community health & wellness, and she firmly believes that because of the damaged world that we live in healing is a daily and lifelong process for all of us.

Meet Kezia Curtis!

Kezia R. Curtis is an aspiring healer, level 1 Reiki practitioner and lifelong Peace Activist from Detroit, Michigan. With justice passions encompassing Black liberation, Black and Palestinian solidarity, feminism and q***r activism, Curtis currently works as one of the Co-Director at the Detroit Area Restorative Justice Center , Co-Coordinator of the Mentoring Program at Feedom Freedom Growers, and volunteers as Co-lead of Detroit Black Lives Matter.

Meet
Ann Schumacher, Ph.D., has facilitated over 1200 hours of Talking Circles in a local high school for the past 7 years. Her dissertation research on Talking Circles indicates that they provide a safe place for peers to help peers through the sharing of collective wisdom and for improving social-emotional literacy skills. Dr. Schumacher has extensive training both in Restorative Practices and court mediation.

During this workshop participants will: 1) Discuss possible uses of Restorative Practices/Restorative Justice in community spaces, 2) Share experiences of harm, 3) Learn the history of DARJC, 4) Gain knowledge about the roots of Restorative Practices/Restorative Justice, and 5) Reflect on the similarities and differences between current justice models and restorative practices. At the completion of this 4-hour workshop, participants will have a basic understanding of Restorative Practices and Restorative Justice.

A 2-hour interactive workshop during which she will introduce the basic principles and guidelines of Talking Circles; demonstrate the process of holding a Talking Circle; and provide participants with material they can use to create their own Talking Circles in schools.

A Talking Circle meets regularly in school once a week with 5-6 students who sit in circle to discuss topics of interest to them. To ensure safety, all participants agree to the Circle’s guidelines of respectful listening, speaking honestly and maintaining confidentiality. The adult Circle Keeper preserves the Talking Circle’s integrity by modeling these guideline

This week Co-Coordinators Josephine Boakye and Kezia Curtis facilitated two trainings with University of Michigan students! As a part of the EPIC Youth Program at Western International High School (in southwest Detroit), these college students offer mentoring, tutoring, and life coaching to the high school students. The EPIC Youth Program is hosted by People's Community Services, and as a program partner the Detroit Area Restorative Justice Center offers restorative justice training and circle keeping at Western International High School.

Join us for a Facilitating Restorative Conferencing Training
January 14 & 15
8:30 am-4:30 pm each day
Participants will receive a certificate from the
International Institute for Restorative Practices.
This is a benefit for anyone seeking employment in human services or education.

Facilitated by William Boyle
This training is generally offered at $320 a person; however, William has generously agreed to facilitate the training pro bono. The cost is for materials, food, and support of the Detroit Area Restorative Justice Center. Your generosity helps us to work.
The training registration cost is a sliding scale from $80-$240. If you can't afford the full registration fee, we can set up barter. No one will be turned away.

IN ORDER TO ATTEND THE TRAINING

Bill Boyle is the former Director of the Model Center, Bowers Academy and Equity Programming
in Bloomfield Hills Schools. He has 31 years of experience as a teacher, athletic coach and administrator at all levels of K-12 education. Bill has worked diligently to form schools that serve as places of belonging for all students as the foundation for learning. He currently serves as an consultant, coach and facilitator for schools, non-profits and the private sector specializing in the areas of Restorative Practices and Equity Literacy. Bill is the Executive Director for the Michigan Network for Equity in Education and is an instructor for the International Institute for Restorative Practices.

This training is a part of the Training Series of the Detroit Area Restorative Justice Center.
