Brick + Beam Detroit

Brick + Beam Detroit Brick + Beam supports the building rehab process by sharing knowledge, building talent and providing access to resources needed to get (or keep!) going.

Brick + Beam Detroit, a community for building rehabbers of all levels, creates opportunities for engagement and champions local talent by providing a centralized support network that includes hands-on classes, how-tos and online forums, storytelling events, social networking, tangible support kits, and more. Brick + Beam Detroit calls building rehabbers to action. For every skill level and every

building type, Brick + Beam provides access to resources needed to get (or keep!) going, share knowledge and talent, and demystify the rehabilitation process. The project is a Knight Cities Challenge finalist and a team effort among Michigan Historic Preservation Network, Preservation Detroit, and Detroit Future City. It was born out of a need to coalesce and support rehabilitation work happening across Detroit in the face of demolition-heavy blight mitigation plans.

🏆Congratulations to our co-founder Emilie Evans for being named one of seven women advocating for historic trades by !

Evans believes that “trades training is imperative for the future of cities. New trades programs are needed, and existing curricula needs to be advanced to include knowledge related to older buildings. Women may have a small-but-growing role in traditional building trades, but they play an outsized role in problem-solving, and will help align the demand for trades with the demand for jobs that are right in front of us.”
