Last week, our Executive Director, Candace Calloway, had the privilege of presenting at the University of Detroit Mercy to a class led by Professor Justin Williams. Professor Williams’ African American history course explores Detroit’s Black organizations and museums. Candace shared the remarkable legacy of Dr. Rosa Slade Gragg, discussed our ongoing rehabilitation efforts, and emphasized our rich history of community programming.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the leadership and legacy that continue to guide our work and preserve spaces built by and for Black women in Detroit. ✨✊🏽

In honor of International Day of Women and Girls in Science Day, we’re highlighting profound contributions made by Black women in the engineering, science and technology sector.

1. Dr. Patricia Bath was an ophthalmologist, inventor, and academic. She was the first Black woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology and the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent. She invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device that revolutionized cataract surgery and restored sight to millions of people worldwide.

2. Kimberly Bryant is an electrical engineer and the founder of “Black Girls CODE”, a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching young Black girls and other underrepresented groups how to code and pursue careers in technology. Her work has empowered thousands of girls to enter and thrive in the tech industry.

3. Dr. Aprille Ericsson-Jackson is the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Howard University and the first Black woman to receive a Ph.D. in engineering at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She has worked on numerous NASA projects, including the development of spacecraft and instruments for space exploration.
