A Legacy in Literacy Starts at Home!

Proud DPSCD alumni are changing the narrative, and Mumford High School alum Denise Lewis is leading by example.

During National Reading Month and Women’s History Month, the Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation announced a transformational $60,000 investment by Lewis to reimagine the library at Marcus Garvey Academy, a cornerstone of African centered education on Detroit’s east side.

A retired real estate attorney and lifelong reader, Lewis is pouring back into the district that shaped her future.
Her investment will modernize the library with culturally reflective books, new digital resources, updated cataloging systems, flexible seating, and an inspiring custom mural.

The goal is to create a welcoming, student centered space where literacy, culture, and identity come together.
Marcus Garvey Academy has long stood as a village for Detroit families, and this revitalized library ensures students can see themselves in the stories they read while building strong academic foundations.

DPSCD Foundation leaders describe the gift as a powerful example of what happens when Detroit alumni give back with purpose, investing not only in schools but in future scientists, artists, educators, and leaders.

This woman powered, community driven project reflects Detroit pride at its best. When we invest in literacy and education, we invest in every future our students will write.
