β€οΈπ€π Honoring Juneteenth ππ€β€οΈ
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states. Yet it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. This historic day became known as Juneteenth and is recognized as the oldest national celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Today, Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the continued pursuit of equity, justice, and opportunity for all. It is a time to honor the resilience, contributions, and achievements of African Americans throughout our nation's history.
At the Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan, we remain committed to empowering communities, advancing economic opportunity, and creating pathways to success for future generations.
As we celebrate freedom, let us also celebrate progress, unity, and hope for a brighter future.
Happy Juneteenth!
