Meet the first Journalism Fellow at the Institute of Gerontology: Nargis Rahman who officially started in September. Nargis is a WDET (101.9) reporter and producer and has written for several national publications. And she is a proud graduate of Wayne State University.

"I joined the IOG Journalism Fellowship to report on aging communities because I am passionate about telling stories about communities of color. I also realize journalists are not well equipped to write about aging and older adults."

In media commentary on cord‑cutting in Michigan, IOGs Dr. Carrie Leach emphasized that rapid declines in cable subscriptions risk deepening the digital divide. Many still lack reliable broadband, up‑to‑date devices, or comfort with streaming platforms, which means TVs remain a critical lifeline to information especially among older and low-income residents.

Cable television subscribers fell below 1 million in Michigan in 2025, as concerns about the cost of streaming services are increasing.
