April is Fair Chance Month (also known as Second Chance Month), and we’re celebrating the work of Center for Employment Opportunities - CEO.

Launched in Detroit in 2018, CEO provides comprehensive employment services to 115+ community members impacted by the legal system annually. Support includes life skills training, education, immediate paid transitional employment, and full-time job placement and retention support to help individuals build career pathways and financial stability.

This month, CEO launched “Game Plan for Opportunity,” a national campaign supported by Inspire Change in celebration of Fair Chance Month. “Fair chance hiring is a game plan that helps everyone win. When people with past convictions get a real opportunity to work, our businesses grow stronger, our communities become safer, and our economy works better for everyone.”

“What kept coming up in our community conversations was the need for guaranteed income.”

Through our year-long selection process grounded in community voice, Rx Kids stood out as a program Detroit families need and support.

Applications for RxKids opened in Detroit in February 2026. Thanks to strong support from both public and private sectors, including municipal and state-level governments, as well as local philanthropic partners, the program is positioned to serve the entire city.

Detroit families deserve strong support from the very start.

Our last investment, Rx Kids, is a groundbreaking program that provides direct cash support to families during pregnancy and a baby’s first months of life. Families can receive $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 per month for the first six months after birth — no strings attached.

Grounded in public health research and designed to eliminate stigma, RxKids aims to reduce the toxic stress of poverty during a critical window for child development. Learn more about how RxKids is supporting Detroit families ⤵

At GreenLight Fund, we know that leadership grounded in community is key to lasting impact. And Margrit Allen, the founding Executive Director of inaugural Detroit portfolio organization , has always modeled what it means to lead with deep local knowledge, shared power, and a vision for equity.

We had the opportunity to sit down with her last year and reflect on her full circle journey from founding local portfolio leader to serving on the Selection Advisory Council that guides our Detroit investments. Margrit understands what it takes to thrive in the nation's largest majority Black city: a deep commitment to honoring the expertise honed by lived experience, and empowering local leaders to co-create strategic solutions to entrenched challenges.

This is the heart of our work here in the city — solutions built with, not for, Detroiters. This , we honor Black leaders like Margrit whose insight, wisdom, and collaboration continue to shape Detroit’s future.

We often say: GreenLight goes beyond the check.

Yes, we invest in proven organizations. But we also:

🔗 Connect them with community stakeholders 📣 Raise visibility to ensure long-term traction
🔎 Seek opportunities to integrate impact with existing initiatives

Our staff stay involved long after funding — coaching, connecting, and championing our partners so they can meet the moment and deepen their roots in the city. (Though the founding Executive Director of Bottom Line Detroit could probably teach a seminar on nurturing your roots 😉)

Particularly for Black communities historically excluded from access to capital — financial, social, experiential — network weaving and hands-on support exemplify a core philosophy underlying our work: Change isn’t transactional. It’s relational.
