On behalf of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Board of Education and the administration, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our colleague, Dr. Iris A. Taylor, Board Treasurer, on July 30, 2026.

Throughout her career, Dr. Taylor was a driving force behind this district’s progress — a former Board President, a respected healthcare executive, and a fierce champion for equitable opportunities in our schools. Her guidance shaped decisions that will benefit generations of Detroit students, and her presence at the board table will be greatly missed.

We share our sincerest sympathies with Dr. Taylor’s family and all who knew her during this difficult time, and ask the community to respect their privacy in the days ahead. Details on memorial arrangements will follow.

Detroit is getting ready to welcome Veterans from across the country for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, July 9–14, and we’re looking for volunteers to help make the event an incredible experience!

This is a wonderful opportunity to support our Veterans, be part of a nationally recognized adaptive sports event, and show the strength of our community.
