Our Mission
The mission of the CUYFD is to improve outcomes for Westside Detroit youth and their families by establishing and strengthening community collaboratives that promote positive youth development and community revitalization through the prevention of youth substance abuse and other problem behaviors. The CUYFD mission statement was crafted to reflect the work to be accomplished by way of meaningful partnerships with established resources throughout the Westside community.

One pill. One choice. Everything changes.

Synthetic opioids like fentanyl are closer than you think, often hiding in plain sight. In 2026, the risk is higher, the drugs are stronger, and the consequence is irreversible. Your brain, your body, your future. Don't let them take it.

We're breaking the silence. This generation will not be defined by addiction.

Know the facts. Know the risks. Watch our 2026 Opioid Prevention PSA and start the conversation.

💜 May is Mental Health Awareness Month — and we’re starting with the most important message of all:

You. Are. Not. Alone.

One in five young people experience a mental health challenge — anxiety, depression, grief, trauma — at some point. That’s not weakness. That’s being human.

But here’s what too many of our young people on the Westside still believe: that asking for help is something to be ashamed of. We are here to dismantle that belief — every single week this month.

At CUYFD, our team is trained in Mental Health First Aid, QPR (Question. Persuade. Refer.), and Motivational Interviewing. We see you. We’re here.

💬 Drop a 💜 in the comments if you believe mental health matters in Detroit.

Today was a powerful reminder of what community looks like in action 💙

Thanks to everyone who showed up for our Drug Take Back Day, we safely collected over 16 pounds of unused prescription medications and turned them in to the 12th Precinct. That’s 16 pounds of potential harm removed from our homes, our streets, and out of reach of our youth.

Events like this matter. In our community, access to substances and low perceived risk continue to impact our young people, making prevention efforts like this critical to protecting their future .

A special shoutout to Gwen Moore and our Hartford family for your continued support, dedication, and love for this work. We couldn’t do this without you!

Let’s keep showing up, staying informed, and taking action together.
