Happy Homes/Cooley High Renovation Project
Community Partners,
Greetings! I am Pastor Will Council of Calvary United Methodist Church, located at 15050 Hubbell Street, Detroit, Michigan 48227. Many of your contact information was supplied to me to my new friend, Charlotte Blackwell. I hope and pray all is well with you and your areas of influence and responsibility. Perhaps, we all have been trying to overcome the challenges of the COVID Pandemic while supporting the communities we care deeply about.
During these challenging times, a potential community improvement opportunity has emerged that may be beneficial to all our communities. As some may have heard, a couple of groups were interested in revitalizing the old Cooley High School property (which is located directly across from my church). As I understand it, the Detroit Board of Education may be accepting bids on the sale of the school within the next year. I was contacted by one of the groups led by Ms. Nicole Pitts that her group was withdrawing their bid on the property. This left one group, Life Remodeled, still interested in purchasing the property.
This led to one of the reasons for the email to you today. Life Remodeled is seeking community support for their revitalization of the Cooley High School. They are seeking letters of endorsement from the community to present along with their bid for the purchasing of the property. For my part, with the guidance of Deacon Charles Thomas and Sandra Sterling, I volunteered to host a virtual community meeting on Zoom Virtual Platform. So, the community can hear their plans and have a conversation on any issues, concerns or suggestions that would benefit the community.
My second reason for emailing everyone is in hope that we can form a new coalition within our shared area. Someone said, “It good to have friends before you need them”. I believe this opportunity provides a coming together of blessings for our communities where we can share information, resources, and support.
I tentatively would like to set up a community meeting for June 29, 2021, at 6:00 pm (meeting information is below). The meeting will last one hour.
