We strongly condemn the far-right extremist Jake Lang and those joining his planned anti-Muslim march in Dearborn, Michigan.
Lang and his supporters are calling this a “crusade.” They have spoken about militias, biker groups, violence and the possibility of a “street war.” This is not a protest over a particular law or decision. They are coming into a largely Muslim community to insult its residents and provoke an angry response.
That response is exactly what they want.
We urge Dearborn residents and everyone else in Metro Detroit not to give it to them. Unless you have legitimate business before the City Council, stay away. Do not confront Lang. Do not argue with his supporters. Do not become part of the footage they want to spread online.
Anti-Muslim hatred is already widespread in the United States and around the world. Lang wants videos he can use to make Muslims look dangerous while presenting himself as the victim. Fighting with him will only help him do that.
Nothing Lang says justifies violence against him. Attacking him would be wrong, would put more people in danger and would hand him exactly the propaganda he came to Dearborn to create.
Dearborn is not a battlefield. Its Muslim residents, some of whom I count among my friends, are ordinary people trying to live, work, raise their families and practise their faith in peace.
Let the police deal with anyone who breaks the law. Let Jake Lang shout his hatred at an empty sidewalk.
Hate is a fire, and attention is its oxygen. Give it no breath and let it die in silence.
Do not give him the attention he came for.
