We collect problems in the so-called "first" world and send them to think tanks in the "developing" world to be solved. Ghana ThinkTank is an international collective that “develops the first world” by flipping traditional power dynamics, allowing the “third world” to intervene into the lives of the people living in the so-called “developed” world. We collect problems from communities throughout t

he USA and Europe, and send them to think tanks we created in “developing” communities. The think tanks – which include a group of bike mechanics in Ghana, a rural radio station in El Salvador, Sudanese refugees seeking asylum in Israel, an artist collective in Iran, and a group of incarcerated girls in the Boston penal system, among others – propose solutions, which are then implemented in the “first world”. Ghana ThinkTank’s innovative approach to public art reveals blind spots between otherwise disconnected cultures, challenges assumptions about who is “needy,” and turns the idea of expertise on its head by asking people in the “third world” to solve problems of people in the “first world.” This process helps people overcome their own stereotypes while being exposed to the stereotypes that other cultures have about them. Ghana ThinkTank was founded in 2006 by Christopher Robbins, John Ewing and Matey Odonkor. The project began with think tanks in Ghana, Cuba, and El Salvador, and has since expanded to include Mexico, Iran, Serbia, Indonesia, Sudan and Morocco.

The ThinkTank in Iran is composed of a group of artists based in Tehran. Over the years, they have solved many problems submitted by people in the US and UK, including collecting funny dirty stories from the elderly and then presenting them to the young; and making T-shirts for frowning people that show their own smiling faces.

Meet our Guantánamo Bay Think Tank members: first up* is Mohamedou Ould Slahi-Houbeini.

Mohamedou Ould Slahi-Houbeini was taken into custody from his home country, Mauritania, and then rendered to Jordan and Afghanistan before being sent to Guantánamo. His best-selling memoir, Guantanamo Diary, documenting the first years of his imprisonment and abuse, has been translated into 25 languages and has been republished in a restored edition without the original government redactions. The book was the basis for the feature film, The Mauritanian.

*please note that because some of the members of our Guantánamo Bay Think Tank are in precarious political positions after their release without any charges, we will not be able to introduce every member.

As Trump resurrects Guantánamo Bay’s dark past by sending migrants to the military prison, Ghana ThinkTank has partnered with the Human Rights Institute to create a think tank powered by the very individuals once imprisoned without charges in America’s most notorious detention facility.
These former detainees aren’t seeking vengeance. Instead, they’re turning the system’s injustice into an opportunity by offering their unique perspectives and solutions to the country that once held them captive. Meet them via live video Sunday, May 4, 1:30pm at

Ghana ThinkTank recently worked with the Human Rights Institute Source Project to form a new “Gitmo ThinkTank” of recently-released Guantanamo Bay detainees. As with all our think tanks, they provided analysis and solutions to American problems that we collected and sent to them.

The documented process of our work with them will be at an exhibition opening Sunday May 4 at HCS Center for Arts and Counter Culture in Vestal, New York. The artwork of one of the Guantanamo Bay ThinkTank members, made while in detention, will also be on display:

Held for over a decade without charge in Guantanamo Bay, Sabri al-Qurashi taught himself to paint while imprisoned. He could hear the ocean every day but never see it—like many detained there, the sea remained just beyond a tarped fence.

His paintings offer imagined visions of the ocean, vivid memories of home, and haunting documentation of interrogation, force-feeding, and isolation. His work speaks directly to the contradictions of American ideals—freedom, justice, democracy—through the eyes of someone denied them.
