St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center Empowering Futures Through Education. Founded in 1844, the St. However, in 2006, the Center closed its residential campus due to elimination of funding.

Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center most recently served Southeastern Michigan as a residential / foster care agency for children. It was determined that rather than close the doors of the organization, to return to its roots – providing assistance to the residents of the community through educational programs. At the end of 2006, St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center moved to Detroit and continues its services of helping both children and adults through education.

Each year, SVSF joins the Detroit Police Department’s 9th Precinct for Halloween in the D, and we see close to 1,000 children from our community come through to trick-or-treat and enjoy the celebration. The smiles in this Reel are from a previous year and your donations help us create those moments again. 🧡

Our Amazon Wishlist includes candy, chips, school supplies, and mittens, giving you several easy ways to help support the kids who attend.

🍎 MISSION MONDAY: We’re Ready for You! 📚

Our Fall Afterschool Tutoring Program begins this week, and we’re so excited to welcome our students back to St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center!

There’s a lot to look forward to this fall. Along with reading, math, and homework help, students will have opportunities to explore STEAM projects, yoga, cooking, creativity, our Urban Garden, and a brand-new art wall where they can leave their mark.

And of course, the Kids Bucks Store is stocked and ready! Students can earn Kids Bucks while learning about saving, spending, goal-setting, and making choices.

Most importantly, our Children’s Program team, volunteers, and interns are ready to encourage, challenge, celebrate, and support every student who walks through our doors.

We can’t wait for the moments when a math problem finally clicks, a new interest is discovered, or a STEAM project comes together. The "AHA" moment is what it's all about.

There is so much potential walking through our doors this week, and we can’t wait to see the academic growth, confidence, creativity, and friendships that develop along the way.

For the past few years, SVSF has been proud to join the Detroit Police Department’s 9th Precinct for Halloween in the D. This is one of our favorite events! Seeing the joy on the faces of kids from our community as they trick or treat, laugh, and enjoy the celebration is what makes it so special.

This year, we’re getting ready to do it all again, and we need your help!

Another goal accomplished and another reason to celebrate!

Jamaile recently earned his GED® with support from St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center. In his exit interview, he shared how important the encouragement and support he received throughout his journey was:

“Everyone on the staff was a big help and a great encouragement in helping me pass and accomplish my goals.”

At SVSF, students are supported by a community of volunteers, staff, and college and career navigators who help them prepare, stay encouraged, and take the next steps toward their goals.

Some seasons challenge us more than others. Plans change. Doors close. Resources stretch. And sometimes, the path forward looks very different from what we imagined.

But gratitude isn’t reserved for the easy seasons.

At SVSF, we see every day how challenges can lead to growth, new opportunities, stronger relationships, and new ways forward.

It’s the excitement on a child’s face when a new concept finally clicks.
It’s the adult learner who keeps working toward their GED® despite the obstacles in their way.
It’s the staff member who finds another solution, the volunteer who keeps showing up, and the partner who continues to believe in what’s possible.

Those moments remind us why this work matters.

They also remind us that sometimes, what feels like a setback is actually preparing us for the next chapter.

This Mission Monday, we’re choosing gratitude through the challenges, embracing opportunities to pivot, and looking ahead with purpose.

We’re grateful for the victories behind us, the people beside us, and the possibilities still ahead. 💙

Did you know St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center’s story began more than 180 years ago?

In 1844, what would become SVSF began in Detroit as a kindergarten serving orphaned children, operated by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Over the generations, the needs of our community have changed and so has the Center.

Today, SVSF is a modern nonprofit providing free educational support for children and adults, including tutoring, GED® preparation, workforce development, college and career navigation, and other programs designed to help learners move forward.

While our programs have evolved, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to creating opportunity through education.

From our earliest roots serving Detroit children to the work happening in our classrooms today, we are proud to continue a legacy of service that began in 1844.

💙 More than 180 years of learning, growth, and community and our story is still being written.

Learning is important but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun!

At St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center, we love seeing our students work hard, ask questions, build confidence, and enjoy themselves along the way.

From focused learning moments to the laughs in between, our classrooms are a place where students can feel supported, comfortable, and excited to keep growing.

Because sometimes the best learning happens when students feel free to be themselves. 💙
