Real Life. My Music.

Real Life. My Music. Real Life. My Music. exists to create a safer and healthier Detroit for our school children by providing them access to the fine arts.

“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them, a world of work, culture, intellectual activity and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” –Gerald Ford, former President, United States of America

"The hours between 3-6pm are the peak hours for juvenile crimes and exp

erimentation with drugs, alcohol, ci******es and s*x". - After School Alliance, 2009

In the city of Detroit there is a considerable need for both quality after-school programming, which there is a staggering lack of, as well as fine arts programs because as the city’s deficit rose, the Detroit Public School system administered budget cuts that eliminated almost all fine arts programs without consideration as to the indefinable benefits involved with including fine arts as part of a general education curriculum. With the current state of the Detroit Public School system as well as the trying economic state of the city, we have faith that Real Life. will provide our youth with hope and inspiration while showing them alternatives to the life they see on a daily basis. If we can inspire one child to use music as an outlet and means of personal and academic progress, then we have successfully exercised our mission.

For those of you that don’t know, Real Life. My Music. was founded in 2008 in an off campus apartment. My dream was to have an arts center where inner city students could take any type of art class their little heart desires. The struggle of growing up in the 313 tends to damper our kids flicker of light for the arts, but Real Life. My Music. Is here to bring it back.

After dissolving in 2015 we are now creating our path to pick up right we’re we left off, seasoned and invested instructors and youth who can’t sit still and want to paint all over the walls.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be posting donor sessions to Introduce you to our work and our currrent need.

IF you’re interested in donating or learning more, feel free to message us. As it stands it take $44 to pay for one student to take our 6 week program.

As many of you know, Real Life. My Music. offered free after school art programs for inner city youth. As we adjust to this new normal; virtual. We’ve been playing around with the idea of offering art boxes to our younger kids via the subscription process.

Let us know if you’re interested!

Everyone knows that training is the cornerstone of a successful career in dance. But as a dance educator, I also take comfort in the fact that high-quality dance training helps shape students into genuinely good people (in addition to creating future artists, which is a wonderful goal in itself.) We've been saying this all along.

Dance — and physical activity — should have the same status in schools as math, science and language. Psst: it may even help raise test scores, says Sir Ken Robinson.
