Black Caucus Foundation of Michigan

Black Caucus Foundation of Michigan The Foundation develops public policy initiatives and direct service programs to improve the quality of life for African Americans.

Founded by the Honorable Alma G. Stallworth during her tenure in the Michigan Legislature while serving as Chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus; the Foundation was established as a 501-c3 tax exempt organization dedicated to the creation and delivery of service programs which improve the economic circumstances and quality of life for Michigan’s African American citizenry. The Foundation’

s creation evolved from a segment of social-economic and political history which continues to frame the advancement of Black America. At the base of this history was the understanding of a cross section of Black leaders that intellectual resources were needed to support research dedicated to the development and implementation of public policy initiatives critical to the well-being of Black people in America and around the globe. The Foundation is dedicated to the development and implementation of programs and initiatives that effectively address issues such as these. Critical to these endeavors will be continued efforts to educate decision makers, both White and Black, to Michigan’s African American political history and advocacy for the Vertical Integration of minorities into business and government operations during the 21st Century.

Today, we honor the life, legacy, and immeasurable impact of Jesse Jackson.

A tireless champion for justice, equality, and human dignity, Reverend Jackson dedicated his life to advancing civil rights, economic empowerment, and political representation for marginalized communities. His voice helped shape generations, his leadership opened doors once thought closed, and his courage reminded us all that progress requires persistence, faith, and action.

The Black Caucus Foundation of Michigan extends heartfelt condolences to the Jackson family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life and work. We honor him not only in remembrance, but in renewed commitment to continue the fight for equity, justice, and opportunity for all.

May his legacy forever inspire us to keep marching forward. 🕊️✊🏾

💐🙏🏾💐 Congresswomen Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick was a member of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Whether you knew her as Congresswoman Kilpatrick , Carolyn , Nataki or Mom ..... you knew she was a great teacher, passionate orator and committed public servant who LOVED Detroit and her family.

Deeply grounded in her faith and ourstory, the Congresswoman set a high bar for elected representation by "walking what she talked". Aa Chair of Department of Corrections Appropriations in the Michigan legislature she transformed a warehousing system into education and treatment system that focused on preparing "returning citizens" for productive life , versus "convict policing".

Her deep belief in the Nguzo Saba was demonstrated in a career commitment to "defining" the marginalized through a strength-based lens exemplified by her passion for using "Returning Citizen" instead of "convict" for formally incarcerated persons ; and with the support of D.C. Mayor Marion Barry use of that term is commonplace today . She also advanced oversight of private beneficiaries of inmate labor to stop and prevent abuses of "convict leasing" disguised as Work Realease programs.

Her contributions to ourstory include helping to establish a State of Michigan Department of Commerce Office of African Trade in Lagos, Nigeria ; and a state tax credit for corporations advancing contracting opportunities for minority businesses. That same commitment was
made at the Federal level as Congresswoman Kilpatrick drafted and obtained an Executive Order from President Clinton to advance minority contracting in federal agencies.

Achieving an appointment to the Congressional Committee on Appropriations was HUGE for Detroit, as the Congresswoman delivered big for the City with federal resources for infrastructure, transportation, parks and housing. Things like the Rosa Parks bus depot exist because of Congresswoman Kilpatrick.

OURSTORY is one of blood, sweat & tears ; challenges and hurdles, love and compassion, faith and work, beauty and brilliance.

All these things and more we saw in the life of our beloved Congresswoman.

💐 REST WELL Queen.... and may the prayers for peace and grace for the Kilpatrick family be answered.
