FLOWERS GONE WILD!

It’s National Plant Month and we’re letting loose and getting wild—the flower way. 🌼🔥👀🤣

No more conservative, manicured lawns. We’re turning up the color, the chaos, and the purpose with native wildflowers that bring the buzz back.

Petals popping. Bees pulling up. Butterflies showing out. 🦋🐝

Because when flowers go wild… everything comes alive.

Spice up your garden life with these wild beauties

🌿 Less lawn. More life.
🌸 Plant native. Stay wild.
🔥 Let it bloom loud.

Happy Arbor Day! Let’s Grow Together 🌱

In cities like Detroit, Arbor Day isn’t just a celebration—it’s a call to action. A chance to rebuild, reimagine, and restore what was lost—creating community resilience after Detroit’s urban tree canopy decline. Trees are more than part of the landscape… they’re living infrastructure that cool our neighborhoods, clean our air, manage stormwater, and support biodiversity. 🌿

In just under two years, with the incredible support of The Greening of Detroit, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Hispanic Access Foundation’s Nuestros Bosques Community Forestry Grant, together, we’ve planted 154 trees across five project sites—each one strengthening Detroit’s comeback. 🌳

This work directly aligns with Detroit’s growing identity as a Tree City USA, Bird City, Bee City USA, and a UNESCO City of Design—where thoughtful design, environmental stewardship, and community-driven spaces come together to shape a more sustainable, vibrant future. 🐦🐝🌼

From vacant lots to thriving green spaces, we’re growing more than trees—we’re growing healthier communities, restoring ecosystems, and building a future where both people and pollinators can thrive.

Let’s keep planting. Let’s keep growing.
Because resilience is rooted in the trees we plant today. 🌍💚

🌳🐝🐦 Happy Arbor Day from Detroit Hives—let’s talk birds, bees & trees: trees are living infrastructure that clean our air, cool our neighborhoods, manage stormwater, and support biodiversity, while the Pileated Woodpecker helps create vital habitats that even honeybees call home.

From trees to woodpeckers to pollinators, it’s all connected—so let’s plant, protect, and reimagine our green spaces because when we grow trees, we grow life.

This is the beauty of nature’s interconnected design.

And right here in our city, we’re proud to say:
Detroit is a Bird City, Tree City USA, Bee City USA, UNESCO city of Design.

Scientists recently uncovered one of the world's largest known aggregations of wild bees beneath East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca, New York.

Researchers from Cornell University estimated that approximately 5.5 million ground-nesting bees, primarily the solitary species Andrena regularis, or regular mining bee, emerged from the soil in spring 2023.

This massive population occupied about 6,500 square meters, equivalent to more than 200 typical honeybee hives packed into a small 1.5-acre plot—far denser than usual for such insects.

The discovery began accidentally when a lab technician collected several bees while walking through the cemetery and realized the scale of activity.

These bees are solitary rather than social like honeybees; each female digs her own underground nest to lay eggs, yet they form dense communal nesting sites.

The cemetery's undisturbed, well-drained soil has supported this thriving colony for decades, with records of Andrena regularis dating back to at least 1935, making it likely one of the oldest documented aggregations.

This underground "bee city" highlights the ecological value of cemeteries as refuges for pollinators. These bees play a vital role in spring pollination of wildflowers and crops, contributing significantly to biodiversity and food production.

Experts emphasize the need to protect such natural nesting habitats from development, as paving them over could instantly eliminate millions of essential pollinators. The finding underscores how hidden urban green spaces sustain remarkable wildlife.

April is Global Volunteer Month!

At Detroit Hives, we’re committed to restoring vital habitats and creating a brighter future for our community — but we can’t do it alone. We need YOU to help us plant and restore critical habitats for pollinators. 🐝✨

As the climate crisis and habitat loss continue to impact our world, it’s more important than ever to take action. Whether it’s deforestation, building highways, or even creating lawns, the destruction of native vegetation makes it harder for pollinators to find food, safe breeding grounds, and shelter during their migrations. 🌱🦋

With climate change causing plants to bloom earlier and disrupting the arrival of migrating pollinators, both wildlife and plant life are at risk. Additionally, the devastating effects of wildfires make it even harder for ecosystems to thrive. 🔥🌿

But together, we can make a difference. Join us this month and volunteer to help restore these vital ecosystems, giving pollinators the support they need to thrive. 🐝🌸

Let’s work together to heal our planet, one flower at a time. 🌎💚
