Corner Shower and Laundry

Corner Shower and Laundry CSL's mission is to offer homeless members of the community access to clean, safe showers and laundry services, providing those in need with a fresh start.

Have you ever gone without showering for more than a couple days? Imagine weeks and months at a time without that luxury. Imagine not having a safe place in which to wash up in or not having a clean change of clothes. In January 2015, a diverse group of Metro Detroiters came together to found Corner Shower & Laundry (CSL) – a venue in which the mostly homeless guests of Manna Community Meal soup k

itchen (housed within St Peter’s Episcopal Church) can have that safe place, and their dignity, as they shower and do laundry. Corner Shower and Laundry offers FREE showers and laundry services to all those in need. No questions asked. We are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 7:30-11am. 💜 A Face of Corner Shower & Laundry: Dennis’s Story

For the past six months, Dennis Buck has been coming to Corner Shower and Laundry at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church — not just to wash his clothes or take a shower, but to feel safe, respected, and human.

When Dennis talks about why he comes here, his answer is simple: it feels safe, and it’s clean.

While other facilities play an important role, crowded environments and conflicting personalities can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here, he finds calm. Security. A place where he can take care of himself without worry.

Dennis grew up on Detroit’s west side — this city has always been home. He first learned about Corner Shower and Laundry nearly five years ago during a previous period of housing instability. When he recently found himself unhoused again, he was relieved to discover the program was still here.

Because when you’re navigating uncertainty, something as basic as a warm shower and clean clothes means everything.
It’s dignity. It’s confidence. It’s the ability to walk into the day feeling like yourself.

Dennis shared that health challenges connected to a childhood leg injury made it difficult to continue working jobs that required long hours on his feet. Losing his job also meant losing income and insurance. Right now, he’s waiting on next medical steps — but through it all, he remains deeply grateful.

He told us he hopes Corner Shower and Laundry never has to close its doors. He understands something we see every day:
As funding shrinks, the need keeps growing.

Places like this aren’t a luxury. They’re essential.

Still, Dennis holds onto hope. His biggest wish?

That one day programs like this won’t be needed at all — because everyone will have stable housing and support.

In Stan's retirement, he has made a habit of visiting various churches around the city each morning, both to support his physical needs as well as social ones. He says, "I don’t come down here broke – I got money, not a lot of it, but I keep some money in my pocket, because I worked for Ford and I know how to balance my budget. But those that don’t have money, they my people. I’m no better than they are. I don’t try to act like I’m any better than they are. I try to help wherever I can. Anyone I see."

Everyone who comes to Corner Shower and Laundry has their own unique story. Some come because they live on the streets and don't have another place to bathe or wash their clothes. Others live in homes or shelter, but come because they are on a tight budget and can't afford a laundromat. Others co
