The Youth Development Resource Center (YDRC) supports youth development providers across the Detroit area to strengthen their individual and collective impact on youth. We work with hundreds of providers across Detroit – large and small with a range of program offerings — to strengthen their individual and collective impact on youth. The YDRC focuses on empowering youth development providers that

To connect all Detroit-area youth to high-quality youth development opportunities that grow their capacities to thrive in school and life.

Last week, we hosted our annual Coaches’ Retreat! ✨

Our team of Improvement Coaches is an essential part of our Acting With Data (AWD) cohort, and the retreat gave us a chance to connect, build, and grow together as we prepare for the year ahead.

A few highlights from our time together:
✨ We officially welcomed Destynee to the coaching team!
💡 We participated in a Coaching Best Practices workshop with Monica Marie Jones🎨 We created our own stationery and wellness kits
🔐 And we completed a magic-themed escape room — with 13 minutes to spare!

We’re grateful for the energy, care, and expertise our coaches bring to AWD and excited for another year of learning and growth together. 💛

The YDRC team took a little trip to Saugatuck, Michigan for our 2026 Staff Retreat! 💛

From a boat tour and cooking class to yoga, our time together was filled with new experiences, plenty of laughs, and moments to simply enjoy being together outside of our day-to-day work.

More than anything, the retreat gave us an opportunity to reconnect as a team, strengthen our relationships, and reflect as we prepare for another year of supporting Metro Detroit’s youth development community.

We’re heading into the year ahead feeling refreshed, connected, and excited for everything that’s ahead. ✨

And now that we’ve had a little time to recharge, we’re ready to kick off another great year with our network.

We’ll see you at the Fall Network Kickoff. 😉🍂

📍 Mapping Detroit’s Out-of-School Time Landscape

YDRC is excited to launch the Detroit OST Asset Mapping & Landscape Analysis Project. with Dr. Courtney A. Griffin and Briana Parker, Esq. as our research partners.

Recently, we brought together members of our OST Asset Mapping & Systems Advisory Committee for our first in-person gathering to help shape this work.

Over the coming months, the project will explore where OST programs and young people are located, the cost of providing high-quality afterschool programming, and the systems and investments needed to expand access across Detroit.

With insight from providers, partners, young people, and communities, we’ll work to better understand Detroit’s existing strengths, gaps, and opportunities for a stronger OST ecosystem.

We’re grateful to everyone helping move this work forward and look forward to sharing what we learn along the way! ✨

🌟 Partner Spotlight: !FE Leaders 🌟

This month, we’re highlighting L!FE Leaders, a Detroit-based nonprofit empowering young people ages 14–24 through leadership development, workforce readiness, and hands-on learning experiences.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to learn more about how L!FE Leaders connects young people with mentors, career pathways, and real-world opportunities that help build confidence, professional skills, and meaningful relationships.

Since 2018, L!FE Leaders has trained more than 2,500 young people through its programs and continues to invest in the next generation of leaders across Detroit.

Thank you to the L!FE Leaders team for welcoming YDRC and for your continued commitment to helping young people grow, lead, and prepare for their futures. 💜

☀️ Summer Learning Spotlight ☀️

Detroit families believe every child deserves access to a safe, enriching summer experience—but affordability and access remain major barriers.

According to the Detroit After 3PM report:
💲 26% of parents say cost is a barrier to enrolling their child in a summer program.
🚌 28% cite transportation or location challenges.
📍 18% report that programs are simply unavailable.
🔍 20% say information about summer programs is difficult to find.

The good news? 93% of Detroit parents support public funding for summer learning opportunities, and 76% of parents whose children attend a summer program rate their experience as extremely satisfying.

Expanding access is essential-but access alone is not enough. Every young person deserves a high-quality summer learning experience that fosters belonging, builds skills, and creates meaningful opportunities to learn and grow.

Together, we can ensure that every child has access to programs that don't just fill the summer, but help them thrive.
